Gourmet Grazing: Organic food, wine, and beer festival helps Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group

A happy attendee at the 2010 Gourmet Grazing on the Green

The 8th annual Gourmet Grazing on the Green, with lots of gourmet organic food cooked by local chefs, a variety of local wine and beer, plus food-related exhibitors, raises vital funds for the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group. The event is Saturday, September 17 from noon-4p.m at Aptos Village Park. Tickets cost $65 per person or $500 for a group of 10; buy at your local New Leaf Community Market or online. There will also be a limited number of tickets at the door; make sure to go on the early side to be sure to get in. Admission includes food, wine, beer, a souvenir wineglass, and live music for added entertainment.

Food selections will include lobster mac ‘n’ cheese from Blue Horizon Wild, achiote shrimp shooters with lobster bisque crème from The Whole Enchilada, seared ahi from Café Rio, and leg of lamb over sweet potato pancake with chanterelle hash and maple drizzle from The Crow’s Nest Restaurant. Other participating restaurants include Café Cruz, Café Ella, Fresh Prep Kitchens, Hula’s Island Grill & Tiki Room Johnny’s Harborside, Shadowbrook Restaurant, SmoQe and Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine.

Participating wineries and breweries include Alfaro Family Vineyards and Winery, Burrell School Vineyards, Heineken, Hunter Hill Vineyard & Winery, Loma Prieta Winery, Poetic Cellars, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, Seabright Brewery, Sones Cellars, and Vino Tabi. Exhibitors include New Leaf Community Markets, Fra’Mani Foods, Nut Kreations, Redwood Hill Farms, and The True Olive Connection.

For easy transportation, park your car at Cabrillo College and take the free shuttle running just for this event.

SCCBG has funded cancer research and local groups — including many that support people living with cancer — since 1995. The organization was started by a small group of friends who used to play tennis together once a week; they had each lost a relative or friend to cancer and wanted to do something to make a difference. The first event the group hosted was a Spring Forward Against Cancer Tennis Tournament and Celebration; these tournaments are still held each year. Proceeds from SCCBG’s events, including this year’s Gourmet Grazing, benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support and Services, The Katz Cancer Resource Center, UCSC Cancer Research, and WomenCARE.
