Saturday’s Taste of Soquel benefits Second Harvest

The ninth annual “A Taste of Soquel,” benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank, takes place in the courtyard of the Congregational Church of Soquel Saturday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. There will be lots of food, drinks and music at this family-friendly festival.

 

Attendees can enjoy food from restaurants and vendors HOME, The Kitchen at Discretion, El Chipotle Taqueria, Café Cruz, Bella Chi-Cha, Jeff Walls’ Family Honey, Aldo’s Italian Bakery, and Sawasdee Thai Cuisine. There will be fresh cider from Everett Family Farm, beer and wine from Discretion Brewing, Soquel Vineyards, Bargetto Winery, Hunter Hill Vineyard & Winery, VinoCruz, Wargin Wines and Poetic Cellars.

There will be lots of live music, including The Carolyn Sills Combo and “members of the EXPENDABLES Unplugged.” Complimentary coffee will be served by The Ugly Mug, plus tea, lemonade, and more from The Bagelry, Driscoll’s and Donut Station. A kids’ area will feature free activities such as singing with Musical Me, face painting, drumming, art with CherryVale Art Farm, inflatable archery with Kennolyn Camp, and crafts with Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery. More than 50 local businesses participate in the raffle, featuring prizes such as store and restaurant gift certificates.

To coincide with Inauguration Day, today and tomorrow Friday and Saturday Jan. 20 and 21, companies across California including ones in Santa Cruz are showing their support for Planned Parenthood by donating sales proceeds and making other contributions to the reproductive health care organization. There are also a variety of businesses donating to other worthy causes like immigrants’ rights. See highlights below.

  • Downtown Santa Cruz’s Soif Wine Bar and Restaurant has announced it will donate company sales from Jan. 20 to Planned Parenthood. Hours today are 5-10 p.m.
  • Equinox and Bartolo Winery and Tasting Room in Westside Santa Cruz will donate 20% of profits from today to Planned Parenthood’s Santa Cruz chapter. Hours are 2-7 p.m.; they are staying open an extra hour for this fundraiser.
  • Fish Princess Farm is donating 20% of all purchases through Sunday, Jan. 22, to Planned Parenthood. They are open today from noon-6 p.m. Customers can select which chapter when they make their purchase. Fish Princess produces goat milk soap, chicken eggs, cut flowers and fresh produce; its downtown retail shop stocks soaps, lotions, edible treats (like Ashby Confections) and other goodies.
  • Chocolate the Restaurant will donate 20% of sales today to Planned Parenthood. Hours are 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m.
  • Pacific Cookie Company is donating 20% of sales from noon-5 p.m. tomorrow, Sat. Jan. 21, to PP.
  • Discretion Brewing is donating 20% of pint sales today to the Santa Cruz County Immigration Project (SSCIP), a program of the Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County. Hours are 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m.

Food, wine and beer at 2016 Grazing on the Green benefiting cancer research

The 13th annual Gourmet Grazing on the Green—Saturday, Sept. 24 at Aptos Village Park, features 70-plus vendors including local restaurants and caterers, other food businesses, and local wineries, breweries, and spirits distilleries. Proceeds benefit the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group (SCCBG).

 

The event is from noon to 4 p.m. Buy $65 tickets at New Leaf Community Markets (downtown, Westside or Capitola locations) or online http://sccbg.org or it will be $70 at the door if it’s not sold out. If you have a group of 10, you can get tickets for $60 each. Adult admission includes food, drinks and a souvenir wineglass. Kids 10 and under are free; kids ages 10-20 are $35.

 

Participating restaurants, farms, and food vendors for 2016 include The Crow’s Nest, Café Cruz, Café Rio, Real Good Fish, Niman Ranch, SunRidge Farms, Ashby Confections, Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine, Cremer House, Ella’s at the Airport, Surf City Sandwich, Hula’s, Hollins House and Sid’s Smokehouse.

 

Participating wineries, breweries and distilleries include Alfaro Family Vineyards and Winery, Beauregard Vineyards, Hallcrest Vineyards, Kathryn Kennedy Winery, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, Sones Cellars, Wargin Wines, Wrights Station Winery, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, Discretion Brewing, Seabright Brewery, New Bohemia Brewing Co. and Venus Spirits.

 

Proceeds from SCCBG’s events benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Association, Katz Cancer Resource Center, researchers from UC Santa Cruz, the Teen Kitchen Project, and WomenCARE Cancer Advocacy.

Time for the 2016 Santa Cruz Mole & Mariachi festival

The 4th annual Mole & Mariachi Festival is Saturday, Sept. 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Santa Cruz Mission Adobe State Historic Park. The family-friendly food and music festival has free admission. If you want to sample moles, there is a $10 tasting kit for sale that includes six tastes; additional tasting tickets can be purchased for $2 each.

 

Ten local restaurants and chefs—including first-time participant David Jackman of Chocolate—will prepare moles. The other competitors are restaurants El Chipotle, El Jardin, and El Chino; caterers and food makers Cesario Ruiz of My Mom’s Mole, Taquitos Gabriel’s and Sunny’s Catering; and home chefs from Club Tuxpan Santa Cruz, Emma Pinto (Mama Marquita’s) and Lidia Montesino (JoLí Molé).

 

In addition to sampling mole, attendees can purchase beer from Discretion Brewing, wine from Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, fresh-fruit aguas frescas by Mollie’s Country Café and chavelas (a drink made from beer, tomato juice, and spices). Food vendors will sell mole dishes for lunch such as mole Oaxaqueño plates from El Chipotle; mole sopés, mole empanadas and mole huaraches from Taqueria Lidia; and mole tamales from Taquitos Gabriel’s. Also, there will be non-mole selections for sale from Mission Hill Creamery, Garcia’s Fish Tacos and Sason Mexicano, plus churros, fruit cups and roasted corn.

 

There will be music and dance performances, free kids’ crafts and face painting, piñatas every hour, and a raffle with prizes including an all-inclusive trip to Mexico, a wine collection valued at $800 and a stay in an Airstream trailer at the KOA campground across from Manresa State Beach.

 

For the first time ever, Mariachi Feminil Orgullo Mexicano — an all-female mariachi band — will perform at the festival. Other performers include live mariachi music from Mariachi Alma de Mexico and the group’s youth bands, Mariachi Juvenil Alma de Mexico and Mariachi Infantil Alma de Mexico, and dancing by local dance troupes Senderos and Estrellas de Esperanza. Mojigangas (giant, dancing puppets that have been popular at previous festivals) will return.

 

A diverse array of artisans will show and sell work at the festival marketplace, including Artemex’s display of blouses, dresses, drinkware, dolls, jewelry and other handmade items from Mexico; Artesanias Mexicanos; Creative Woman and Alejandro’s Trade. Watsonville food company The Green Waffle will sell take-home packages of healthy waffles.

 

Festival attendees and a panel of local judges will select their favorites. The judges include state Secretary of Natural Resources John Laird; Patricia Santana, owner of Manuel’s Mexican Restaurant; Santa Cruz City Councilmember David Terrazas; Edible Monterey Bay writer Debbie Luhrman; Tony Solis of the Santa Cruz Sentinel; Good Times Publisher Jeanne Howard; and Santa Cruz Life writer Christine Candelaria.

 

All event proceeds benefit the Santa Cruz Mission Adobe State Historic Park (including educational programs and restoration and improvement projects) via Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks. The event encourages alternative transportation by providing free trolley rides from downtown.

Discretion Brewing in Soquel hosts Love Mondays, where drinking beer equals money for local nonprofits. How it works: On selected Mondays, for the entire time the taproom is open (11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.), twenty percent of beer sales are donated to a variety of organizations that have applied for this privilege. This coming Monday, with Farm Discovery at Live Earth as the beneficiary, there is a twist: Discretion Brewing will still donate 20% of beer sales to Farm Discovery AND The Kitchen at Discretion will donate 20% of sales from two unique dishes made with Live Earth Farm produce: salad with smoked potatoes and baby carrots, radishes, Little Gem lettuce and Meyer lemon honey vinaigrette ($10); and Thai basil ice cream with macerated Albion strawberries and broken oatmeal cookies ($8).

Funds raised at Love Monday will help Farm Discovery provide ongoing opportunities for youth to visit Live Earth Farm to learn about organic farming, local food systems, and nutrition. Through Farm Discovery’s programs, local youth—including underserved ones—build confidence in learning to be active caretakers of themselves, their community and their environment.

Family-owned Discretion is committed to producing high-quality handcrafted organic beer. They serve food from The Kitchen at Discretion which chef Santos Majano creates to be shared and paired with the beers. Majano was executive chef at Soif for many years before becoming chef/owner at The Kitchen a couple years ago.

There won’t be a Love Monday on July 4 due to Independence Day (the taproom is open, but for limited hours – 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.). But Discretion is having a big party to celebrate the holiday a couple days early: Saturday, July 2 there is an outdoor BBQ, live music and an IPA release.

July 11: Haven of Hope, which helps young women including foster youth aged 12 to 21

Hop N’ Barley Beer Festival and Strawberry Festival slated for Saturday

There are many food, beer, and wine-related events this weekend: here are details on two happening Saturday, June 25: the Hop N’ Barley beer festival and the Women’s Center strawberry festival. If you missed my article on the Pleasure Point Street Fair the same day, click here.

Scotts Valley: Hop N’ Barley Beer Festival
There will be 60 craft breweries and 10 ciders pouring, plus food for sale, beer games, two stages of live music, and more. It takes place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Skypark (361 Kings Village Road). Breweries, which will each serve two three styles, include Ballast Point, Discretion, Alvarado Street Brewing, New Bohemia, Peter B’s Brewpub and Humble Sea Brewing Co. See full list here. This is the second year for craft cider tastings. The gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. and beer starts flowing at noon. The festival offers live music occurring on two stages.

General admission is $20 and this includes beer and a commemorative glass; buy tickets here. Kids under 10 are free, and adults who are not drinking beer get in for a reduced price of $5. The Hop N’ Barley beer and BBQ festival benefits non-profit Community Housing Land Trust of Santa Cruz County.

Santa Cruz: Strawberry Festival
The annual Walnut Avenue Women’s Center (WAWC) Strawberry Festival, a benefit, takes place from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. outside of the center (303 Walnut). WAWC has provided support and services for women, children, and families for more than 80 years. Read more at the WAWC web site. The Strawberry Festival raises funds for programs including youth development, parenting, advocacy and domestic violence awareness and prevention.

Admission is free, and there will be food for sale from food trucks plus fresh strawberries and strawberry-related items like shortcake, strawberry lemonade and. There will also be a homemade jam contest, a plant sale, kids’ games, a bounce house and arts and crafts. Live music will include Coffee Zombie Collective and Dan P. and the Bricks. It’s time for the 29th annual Spring Bike to Work program, which includes Bike Week from May 6-13, and several restaurants and food/drink vendors are offering participants a variety of rewards and fun activities. Here are some highlights.

Monday, May 9: Bike-In Movie Night is from 7-9 p.m. at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing (402 Ingalls St.). This family-friendly evening will feature “Goonies” and include snacks.

Tuesday, May 10: Cycle & Dine — A number of restaurants and breweries have partnered with Santa Cruz’s Ecology Action, host of the annual Santa Cruz County Bike to Work program, to provide cyclists with meal discounts. Customers need to ride their bikes to the venue and be prepared to show their helmet to each location’s servers.

Thursday, May 12: Bike to Work/School Day is being celebrated from 6:30-9:30 a.m., with free breakfast for cyclists at 13 breakfast sites for the general public and more than 45 school sites. Locations include Aptos, Capitola, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, Soquel, and UCSC. Selected sites will include free massages and basic bike maintenance. Participants also have the chance to win a Blix electric bike. One public site is Downtown SC on Pacific Ave. between Water St. and Locust St. In addition to breakfast, there will be treats from Companion Bakeshop (bacon cheddar biscuits, gluten-free almond cakes and more) and coffee from Verve. Here are details on a couple restaurant events occurring Friday, Oct. 23: a Scotts Valley food-truck-and-film event and a Jamaican restaurant opening in Santa Cruz.

Dinner and Movie in the Park
After a very successful debut event in September with 400-500 attendees, food truck event company Food Trucks A Go Go is hosting its second food truck event at Skypark in Scotts Valley Friday night. This time, it’s even bigger: there will be seven food trucks instead of four, and a free family-friendly movie—Monsters, Inc.—will be shown! The film will be aired on the big outdoor screen via Scotts Valley Recreation, who is partnering with Food Trucks A Go Go this time. Participating food trucks are Ate3One, Zameen Mediterranean, and Aunt LaLi’s Mobile Café (these three were all at last month’s “a Go Go”), plus event newcomers Carmona’s BBQ, G’s Tacos, Mariscos San Juanito, and Zocalo Tamales.

Ate3One really enjoyed participating in the September event. “We felt honored to be invited and share our food with so many of the folks that attended,” says co-owner Jonathan Smith. “It was great to see the excitement on people’s faces as their food came out.” When asked what they’d be selling at the Oct. 23 event, Ate3One replied that they will have staples such as Philly cheesesteaks and garlic shrimp tacos plus a few additions. “We will also be featuring some new menu items that will highlight locally harvested, seasonal produce,” said Smith. “ These include the ‘harvest hog sandwich’ with slow roasted pork tenderloin and a veggie salad featuring roasted butternut squash, apples, and pomegranate,” she added.  Smith looks forward to seeing “another great turn out of awesome foodies and their families.”

Aunt LaLi’s owner, LaLi Kates, is the Food Trucks A Go Go founder. She’s thrilled that the community has embraced these events. I asked her to tell readers a few of the things her truck will be stocked with on Oct. 23. “Our signature Nawlins’-style organic iced coffee, which has become quite popular…our Affogatos, which have a strong following: double shot of organic espresso poured over ice cream, with whipped cream and a chocolate drizzle …made-to-order ice cream sandwiches…cones/cups of scooped ice cream…and hand-crafted Italian sodas,” shared Kates. Remember to save the date for the next Go Go Gathering: Friday, Nov. 13.

Restaurant Opening: The Jerk House
Jamaican restaurant The Jerk House is officially open for business as of Oct. 23, 2015 — they had a soft opening on Wed., Oct. 21. One of their specialties is grilled dishes. The menu’s “small plates” include tacos with choice of shrimp or tofu; Jerk burger; and roasted root salad featuring roasted yam, onion, carrot, potato, turnip, and beets; glazed walnuts; spinach; and cilantro-lime vinaigrette. “Big plates” include spicy jerk chicken (slow-cooked organic Mary’s chicken); Caribbean chicken; hibiscus-glazed ribs; blackened snapper (from local Stagnaro’s) with mango salsa; pineapple yellow curry (vegan); and shrimp skewers. Big plates come with beans, rice, cucumber salad, and sweet fried plantains. The restaurant serves beer on tap from local breweries such as Santa Cruz Ale Works and Discretion Brewing, and bottled beer including Red Stripe. I want to share the news about two fun food events tomorrow: A Taste of Soquel and Charlie Hong Kong’s Kids Food Festival. More details are below.

Charlie Hong Kong is hosting a kids festival at its restaurant (1141 Soquel Ave.). There will be face painting, cooking, photo opportunities, music, art projects, jugglers, prizes, and a special buffet lunch. The cost is $5 and you have to be accompanied by a child in order to attend.

The 12th annual Gourmet Grazing on the Green, Saturday, Sept. 19 at Aptos Village Park, has more food and drinks than ever before! As of press time, there are 73 vendors including local restaurants and caterers, other food businesses, and local wineries, breweries, and distilleries. Proceeds benefit the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group (SCCBG).

The event, which is from noon to 4 p.m., usually sells out so it’s smart to buy tickets ahead of time. Buy $70 tickets at New Leaf Community Markets (downtown, Westside or Capitola locations) or online. If you have a group of 10, you can get tickets for $60 each. Participating wineries, breweries and distilleries include Alfaro Family Vineyards and Winery, Beauregard Vineyards,  Cima Collina, Hunter Hill Vineyard & Winery, Kathryn Kennedy Winery, Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard, Sones Cellars, Bonny Doon Vineyards, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, Discretion Brewing, Seabright Brewery, and Venus Spirits.

Non-alcoholic beverages will include drinks from Tulsi Teas, Pacific Coffee Roasting Co., and Pure Valley Water.

Proceeds from SCCBG’s events benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Association, Katz Cancer Resource Center, UCSC’s fellowship program for cancer research, the Teen Kitchen Project, and WomenCARE Cancer Advocacy.
