Santa Cruz weekend highlights including Church Street Fair

The summertime bounty of events in Santa Cruz continues; here are a few highlights for the weekend of Aug. 5-6, 2017, including refreshment options at the annual Church Street Fair.

 

Saturday & Sunday, Aug. 5-6: Church Street Fair

The Church Street Fair is part of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, which lasts until Aug. 12. As usual, there will be music, dance, art, food, and wine. Participating breweries and wineries include Corralitos Brewing (noon-3:30 p.m. Saturday), New Bohemia Brewing Co. (4-7 p.m. Saturday), Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing (noon-3:30 p.m. Sunday), Uncommon Brewers (4-7 p.m. Saturday), Storrs Winery, Odonata Wines, Soquel Vineyards, Rexford Winery, Alfaro Family Vineyards & Winery and Birichino WinesVinocruz—which is opening in Soquel soon—will be pouring the wine both days. Falafel of Santa Cruz, the chefs from Prophet Elias Orthodox Church who put on the annual Greek festivals, food truck G’s Tacos, and Efi’s Dutch-Indo will sell food on both fair days. Food truck Ate3One will participate on Sunday.

Event organizers promise that “non-stop performances from global traditions will keep your spirits high as you select from a variety of local food purveyors, vintners and brewers, and explore the work of dozens of regional artists and craftspeople” (see site for entire performance schedule, which includes Flor de Cana and Broken English Saturday & Watsonville Taiko Sunday).

Friday night: My Mom’s Mole at POPUP

My Mom’s Mole is hosting dinner at POPUP from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday (or earlier if the food sells out). There will be mole nachos (chicken and veggie options) made with My Mom’s Mole homemade tortilla chips plus their signature cactus and kale salad.

Saturday night: Homeless Garden Project at POPUP

Homeless Garden Project is holding its first “farm to table pop-up” at Assembly’s POPUP, from 5:30-9 p.m. Saturday. Angie Smith is preparing the food. Menu selections will be beet sliders with pickled radishes and creamy green goddess dressing; Southern style barbecue chicken sliders; grilled potato salad with arugula and lemon mustard vinaigrette; summer chopped salad; and strawberries, angel food cake waffles and honeyed whipped cream.

Saturday night: Hanloh at East Cliff Brewing Co.

Hanloh Thai Food will be at East Cliff Brewing Co. from 5-9 p.m. Saturday. Their menu will include vegan and gluten-free options. There will be live music by Take One from 7-9 p.m.

There are many events, including some food-related ones, occurring this weekend in the Santa Cruz area. Here are details for three events in Santa Cruz at POPUP and Assembly (all at 1108 Pacific Ave.).

 

Friday night: My Mom’s Mole at POPUP

To celebrate National Tortilla Chip Day, My Mom’s Mole is hosting dinner at POPUP from 5:30-9:30 p.m. (or earlier if the food sells out). There will be mole nachos (chicken and veggie options) made with My Mom’s Mole homemade tortilla chips and a new mole queso sauce.

 

Saturday: La Sofrita at POPUP

La Sofrita will be at POPUP beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Puerto Rican Pop Up menu will feature dishes including empanadas with vegetarian options, Puerto Rican achiote rice and stewed pink beans, and garlic mojo chicken (made with organic thighs). “And, back by popular demand, shrimp a la criolla,” said chef Anna. The shrimp is simmered in a tomato-white wine broth, with sofrito and manzanilla-stuffed olives, and served atop Puerto Rican rice. “We’ll also have yuca fries served with garlic-olive oil dip,” she added. “You think you like French fries? Wait til you try these!” This pop-up doubles as the pre-party for the Santa Cruz Warriors vs. Windy City Bulls game at Kaiser Permanente Arena, but everyone is welcome, whether or not they are attending that game. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit the development of the Scotts Valley Sports Complex.

 

Sunday: Oscars Viewing Party at Assembly

Event Santa Cruz is hosting its second annual gala event—complete with red carpet—to celebrate the Oscars beginning at 5 p.m. at Assembly. People are encouraged to dress in black tie. Tickets are $35 and include several savory and sweet bites throughout the evening and a glass of champagne upon arrival (additional drinks can be purchased at the new Assembly cocktail bar). There will be a large screen to watch the Oscars, and a separate, “no-talking room” for serious fans. All attendees will be entered in a drawing for Santa Cruz Warriors tickets. Two Santa Cruz food popups on Friday, Jan 6

Santa Cruz’s popup food scene is deliciously thriving; here are two events occurring this Friday, Jan. 6.

HANLOH will be at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing from 6:45-10 p.m. The menu for “Ultimate Thai Beer Snack” will include Moo bing (charcoal grilled pork), Pla mug yang (charcoal grilled Monterey squid), and Khao rad geng (rice and spicy red curry bowl with two options–vegan or with chicken). The curry will be made from homemade curry paste; some of the ingredients are lemongrass, galangal, bird eye chili, dried shrimp, shallot, and garlic.  Owner/chef Lalita Kaewsawang, a Santa Cruz resident, recently started her Thai popup/catering business. As she proclaims on her web site (hanloh.com), her mission is to “bring justice back to Thai food by staying away from canned curry paste and super sweet stir-fry. We focus on the comfort and vibrancy of Thai street food.”

La Sofrita is doing a “Dia de los Reyes Puerto Rican Popup” from 5:30-9 p.m., at POPUP next to Assembly. Chef Anna says she will be serving traditional Puerto Rican holiday fare like “mouth-watering pernil, or Puerto Rican succulent, skin-on, bone-in, roasted pork shoulder stuffed with garlic mojo. The pernil, made with pasture-raised pork from local Fogline Farm, will be accompanied by avocado-tomato salad over mixed greens plus arroz con gandules (Anna says the latter is “the quintessential rice dish that is served on every Puerto Rican table on Christmas Day and on Dia de los Reyes”). A selection of La Sofrita empanadas will also be available; I tasted one of these for the first time a few weeks back and it was absolutely delectable! The variety I had was veggie (kabocha squash, spinach, and leeks with goat cheese) but I’ve heard that the beef picadillo, chicken and shrimp ones are fantastic too.

Here’s a bit of background on Dia de los Reyes from La Sofrita’s Facebook event page: “in Puerto Rico, January 6th is Dia de los Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Day. It marks the culmination of the Christmas season. In Puerto Rico, this is a bigger celebration than Christmas Day itself; gifts are traditionally exchanged on this day rather than Christmas. The night before, children put shoeboxes of hay under their beds for the camels to eat after their long journey, and are rewarded with a gift left under their bed. The day is filled with festivities that include traditional foods and drinks.

“Fresh off the boat” seafood stew is one of Assembly’s prix fixe entrée choices for Santa Cruz Restaurant Week 2016

Santa Cruz Restaurant Week started yesterday, and continues through Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016. Downtown Santa Cruz restaurant Assembly (1108 Pacific Ave., 831-824-6100) is one of the nearly 40 participants from across the county that have created special three-course prix fixe dinners that cost $25 or $35 depending on the venue. These SCRW menus typically include three options for each course: appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Customers choose one selection from each course.

 

For its $35 special menu, one of Assembly’s “starter” selection choices is Kabocha squash soup with brown butter sautéed apples, crème fraiche and fried sage. When chef/owner Kendra Baker owner Zach Davis were planning the menu, Baker was thrilled to see that Route One Farms’ Kabocha squash would be here in time for Restaurant Week. “I love sharing my favorites of the season,” said Baker. “These Japanese Pumpkins have a lovely chestnut-like sweetness and make the most velvety soup.”

 

Two of Assembly’s SCRW entrée selections are seafood stew and braised chicken leg. The stew, described as “fresh off the boat,” is served with potatoes, chard, zucchini, creamy polenta and a tomato-saffron broth. “As the seasons are changing my taste buds were longing for a soul-satisfying brothy seafood dish,” said Baker. “Working on developing this stew I envisioned the earthy notes of tomatoes with the saffron, oils of lemon zest, fennel and white wine being the perfect partners for the bounty of seafood we have available to us.”

 

The chicken entrée includes caramelized leeks, brussel sprouts, gigante beans and fried bread with a lemon butter caper sauce. There’s also a vegetarian option available. “Developing the braised chicken recipe for restaurant week, I had my father’s newfound love for capers at the age of 63 in mind,” said Baker. “He never ceases to surprise me. For the better part of my life I have known him as the iceberg lettuce and garbanzo bean salad with blue cheese dressing kind of guy.”

 

Baker’s partner Davis also has a new caper fan in his family. “My daughter discovered capers a couple days ago at the age of two and loves them,” said Davis. “I’m very excited to have her try this dish!”

 

Dessert choices for the SCRW menu include caramelized apple pie with brown sugar oat streusel and whiskey custard ice cream, and Penny Ice Creamery sorbet trio. Baker and Davis operate The Penny Ice Creamery, Picnic Basket and POPUP in addition to Assembly. In fact, a couple weeks ago they started offering some of their Picnic Basket selections at POPUP (a small storefront connected to Assembly at 1108 Pacific). These include sandwiches and cookies and are available Monday-Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Santa Cruz Seafood PopUp Dinner Thursday from Ocean2Table and Halibut4Humanity

Ocean2table and Halibut4Humanity are partnering for a “Pescetarian PopUp” from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at the Food Lounge in downtown Santa Cruz

 

Organizers say that attendees can expect “delicious and sustainable seafood, veggies and foraged mushrooms.” Another bonus of supporting this event: all profits will benefit single mothers in Santa Cruz County through scholarships awarded by nonprofit organization Halibut4Humanity.

 

Orders will be taken on a “first come, first served” basis. No tickets are required. Visit Ocean2table’s website for more information.

 

As always, the seafood will be local, wild and sustainable—fresh from the boat either that day or the day before. The menu will also include locally sourced, organically grown vegetables and green morel mushrooms that Ocean2table has foraged. Selections for sale will include fresh fish tacos and fish cakes. The Food Lounge bar will be selling local beer, wine and liquor.

 

Isaac Simpson recently started Halibut4Humanity. Its mission is to raise funds for disadvantaged single mothers in Santa Cruz County. For Thursday’s menu, Simpson will be contributing a few ingredients such as smoked Alaskan sockeye salmon that he caught and prepared himself.

 

Charlie Lambert and Ian Cole founded seafood company Ocean2table. They put on all their popups with the goals of encouraging community support and of educating attendees about local, sustainable and organic food.

 

Ocean2table provides very fresh seafood to customers in several local areas; you can choose to pick up or get your fish delivered. Subscribers to the email list (fresh catch “fish alerts”) get notified the day before local fresh fish is available. Customers must place half- or full-share orders by the announced deadline. The Project Pollinate Summer Solstice Music Festival is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at San Lorenzo Park in Santa Cruz. See the event Facebook page for more details including a music schedule. Food details: the Project Pollinate chefs are cooking up a free vegan lunch, to be served at around 1:30. Aptos Natural Foods will be providing organic ingredients for this lunch. There will also be food vendors including Vida Juice Co., La Onda, Pure Heart Chocolate, Solococo and Philosopher’s Stoneground.

Popup: My Mom’s Mole 
My Mom’s Mole is dishing up food at POPUP from 3-10 p.m. (or earlier if the food sells out): mole and Spanish rice, mole on green waffles, and cactus & kale salad. First, choose a base: Spanish rice or a green waffle. Their Spanish rice is made with rice, tomatoes, and fresh vegetables. Green waffles are made with oats, egg whites, spinach, banana, and cauliflower. Next, choose a filling: roasted chicken, slow-cooked pork, or veggie mix (Brussels sprouts, green beans, mushrooms, & potatoes). Then, choose your mole sauce: original (My Mom’s Mole with pork stock), vegan (My Mom’s Mole with vegetable stock), or mole verde (gluten-free with chicken stock). You can also add cactus/kale salad as a side – it has nopales, kale, red onion, tomato, jalapeño & cilantro in a citrus dressing.

Bookshop Santa Cruz: Kids’ party with cake
Bookshop Santa Cruz is celebrating its 50th anniversary with lots of fun events, and Saturday it’s the “Rocking Horse Birthday Party” to honor its mascot. Customers are meet with book characters Frog and Toad and enjoy birthday cake from 1-3 p.m. There will be games and activities.

Soquel Village Sip & Stroll
The Soquel Village Sip & Stroll is from 1 to 5 p.m. Participants can visit various Soquel Village businesses and do wine tasting. There will be family-friendly activities and refreshments in front of Hope Church. It’s a benefit for the Soquel Elementary School Garden Project. Tickets are $30 in advance, $36 at the event, and include a commemorative glass and pours at 10 tasting stations which are at Queen Bee Flowers, Tokaido Gallery, Redz Hair Design, TULA Bodyworks, Play It Again Sports, Loot Vintage, Cowbelles For Heart & Home, Traders Emporium, Center Street Antiques and Wargin Wines Tasting Room. Participating wineries are Armitage Wines, Bargetto Winery, Burrell School Vineyards, Chaucer Cellars, Hunter Hill, Pelican Ranch, Poetic Cellars, Silver Mountain Winery, Trout Gulch Vineyards and Wargin Wines. These days, Santa Cruz is often buzzing with popup energy—and this weekend, May 20-21, there are quite a few food popups. Here are some highlights.

Friday: My Mom’s Mole at Popup
On Friday, My Mom’s Mole is featuring “enmoladas” (enchiladas with mole) for dinner at POPUP from 5 to 9:30 p.m. — or earlier if the food sells out. They are also offering mole tacos, and cactus/kale salad. Taco/enmolada filling choices are roasted chicken, slow-cooked pork, or roasted veggies (Brussels sprouts, mushrooms, potatoes, green beans, and pasilla peppers with cilantro). Sauce choices are traditional My Mom’s Mole, vegan My Mom’s mole, or gluten-free mole verde.

Friday: Monsoon Kitchen at Midtown
On Friday, Monsoon Kitchen will be in residence at Midtown Cafe from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Menu items will include egg curry, lemon rice, naan, kabobs, and mango pie, and they recommend pairing these with Discretion Brewing beer (on tap at Midtown) or a glass of wine (also available at Midtown).

Friday: Cider & Sliders at Food Lounge
The Food Lounge is hosting “Cider & Sliders: Take 2” from 5 to 9 p.m. Chef Andrea and her partners held the first “Cider/Sliders” night a few weeks back, and were surprised by the extremely large crowd that showed up, so they sold out before everyone had a chance to partake. This time, they are ready! They promise “cider flights, food made and paired with cider, and mouth-watering sliders.”

Saturday: Indian pop-up benefiting animals at Food Lounge
Karma Khana will be cooking at an Indian cuisine dinner pop-up at the Food Lounge from 5 to 9 p.m. A percentage of proceeds will benefit the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. Dishes available will include several vegan options like chundal (chickpeas, coconut and turmeric), vegetable biriyani, and Gobi Manchurian (fire-roasted cauliflower breaded in chickpea flour, served with tangy garlic-ginger-soy sauce). Non-vegan options include kofta curry meatballs made with a choice of locally sourced turkey or grass-fed lamb.

There are many food events occurring Friday, May 13 in the Santa Cruz area, including a ribbon cutting to celebrate the opening of a lanai at Hula’s in downtown Santa Cruz.

Hula’s Island Grill and Tiki Room is proud to announce that its new lanai—an outdoor dining space in front of the restaurant—is the first parklet in downtown Santa Cruz. Hula’s and the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz are co-sponsoring a celebratory event from 4 to 5 p.m., with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 4:30. Happy hour is from 2-6 p.m. with several tiki drinks and pupus at special prices. For more information, call (831) 426-HULA.

Food Lounge: Artisan Food Market
From 4-8 p.m., the Food Lounge is the site of the Artisan Food Market, described as ‘farmers market meets cocktail hour.’ There will be several local food artisans and pop-up vendors plus local wine, beer, and cocktails. Vendors will include My Mom’s Mole, Kickin Chicken, Tanglewood, and new participants such as Big Wave BBQ, Twins Kitchen and Santa Cruz Bakes (pizza to order). The Artisan Market series, which began last June, is held the second Friday of each month.

Food Trucks a Go Go: Dinner & A Movie
Food Trucks A Go Go is hosting dinner & a movie at Skypark in Scotts Valley, with dinner and drinks being served from 4:30-8 p.m. and the movie Inside Out airing at 8:30. Attendees can choose from eight local trucks, and there are picnic tables at the park. Participating food trucks are Ate3One, Zameen Mediterranean, The Choke Coach, Aunt LaLi’s Mobile Café, Carmona’s BBQ, Zocalo Tamales, G’s Tacos #2 and India Gourmet.

Popup: Banh Mi
Third Coast Chef, a group of restaurant-trained chefs, will be selling Banh Mi sandwiches at Pop Up (next to Assembly) from 5 to 10 p.m. Banh Mi is a traditional sandwich from Vietnam. Third Coast’s version will include choice of filling (pork/pate, chicken or tofu) plus pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeno, cilantro, and mint. Green papaya salad and Vietnamese iced coffee will also be sold, and there will be an encore day Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We’ve all been waiting patiently (okay, maybe impatiently!) for Dungeness crab season, and Santa Cruz-based Ocean2table has created an event to celebrate its arrival.

On Sunday, April 24, at the Food Lounge (link) in downtown Santa Cruz (1001 Center St.), Ocean2table is hosting the latest in its series of Pescetarian PopUp Dinners: a Dungeness crab feed. Tickets are $60 and must be purchased in advance, online. See end of article for the menu, which includes local, organic vegetables plus some burn morels that Charlie Lambert and Ian Cole foraged this week. As always, the seafood will be local, wild and sustainable.

Lambert and Cole are the founders/operators of seafood company Ocean2table. I went to one of their popup dinners last year and it was absolutely wonderful—for a visual example, see photo above. Local companies they are utilizing for the April 24 dinner include Companion Bakeshop, Rodoni Farms, Pinnacle and Swanton Berry Farm.

Whether or not you can make this event, you should know that Ocean2table is a great place to get very fresh seafood via pick-up or delivery. Subscribers to their email list (fresh catch “fish alerts”) get notified the day before local fresh fish is available. Customers must place half- or full-share orders by the announced deadline. There is no obligation to make a certain number of purchases; you can remain on the email list and buy seafood as infrequently or frequently as you choose.

April 24 Dinner Menu

Main course:

  • Dungeness crab in the shell, caught in the Monterey Bay, served with garlic butter and homemade cocktail sauce

Sides:

  • Rosemary-infused Companion Bakeshop sourdough boules
  • Wild morel, Brussels sprout and potato salad including wild King fire burn morels and creamy tarragon dressing
  • Kale and Parmesan salad featuring Pinnacle kale

Dessert:

  • Strawberry crisp featuring Swanton Berry Farm berries
