Fran Grayson at Branch Out Farm

Fran Grayson at Branch Out Farm

I want to share the news about two food events occurring this weekend: The Truck Stop’s farm taco dinner Friday night and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing’s Sausagefest Saturday afternoon. More details are below; remember Saturday morning and/or afternoon you can head to the festival “A Taste of Soquel.” Read details in this article.

The Truck Stop’s Fish Taco Friday
The absolutely delicious and innovative Santa Cruz mobile food truck The Truck Stop now gets produce fresh from a local farm in Soquel called Branch Out Farm. Owner and chef Fran Grayson is throwing a fun picnic dinner this Friday at the farm; advance tickets are required. Buy tickets and get address of farm here. Grayson promises “legendary fish tacos with seasonal sweet and savory salsas straight from the garden.” For $25, you get lots of tacos, some snacks to start, and lemon-basil cooler to drink. Kids are charged $5 for “kidsadillas” (veggie quesadillas). You’re encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs for seating.

Saturday Sausagefest from Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing
Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing is hosting the seventh annual Sausagefest which includes sausage from vendors including el Salchichero, Freedom Meats and Corralitos Market, and homemade sauerkrauts, relishes, pickles, and mustards. There will also be Bavarian pretzels, caramel apples, ice cream from The Penny Ice Creamery, and lots of organic ale. San Francisco punk/polka band Polkacide is performing.

The festival, from 4-7pm, has an admission fee of $5 for adults (includes souvenir glass) and it’s free for kids. Beer and sausages will be for sale; event proceeds will benefit Friends of Santa Cruz Parks. Doors open at 3:30pm and the event is at the location of the Westside Farmers Market at the corner of Mission Street Extension and Western Drive.

The event, hosted by Intero Real Estate Services at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, is from 4:30 p.m. to sunset and includes live music and an auction. Advance reservations are $49 per person, or pay $55 at the door. It’s located at Intero Real Estate Services and the adjacent Harbor Beach, at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor.

OSO was founded in 1996 by surfer Jack O’Neill, who created a unique, hands-on program aboard a boat in the Monterey Bay (follow-up programs are held in an education center that’s on land). Central California kids in the 4th-6th grades participate and learn about topics including marine science and conservation. Since its launch, OSO has served more than 75,000 students so far with this free program (each group completes a community service project in order to participate).

Event parking at the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor is $2. There is complimentary shuttle service available from the upper harbor, and a water taxi from the west harbor.

Mission Hill Creamery’s salted caramel ice cream

If you visit Mission Hill Creamery’s Scoop Shop and Dessert Café on Sunday, Sept. 15 you can get a $1 scoop of delicious, organic salted caramel ice cream! And I love shopping for our organic ingredients at the Farmer’s Market right outside our back door.”

Kumec is a generous supporter of the local community. During the last year, MHC has donated over $15,000 to a wide variety of groups and schools.
If you haven’t yet visited the shop/cafe, Sunday would be a perfect time to visit. The venue serves a menu of ice cream desserts including cups and cones, sundaes, floats featuring artisan sodas, and a full espresso bar. You can buy pre-packed pints of the award-winning ice cream to take home; pints are also sold at local shops including New Leaf, Shopper’s Corner, and Whole Foods Market plus other stores in town and in the San Francisco Bay Area. Seared ahi tuna from 2011’s Gourmet Grazing on the Green

The annual Gourmet Grazing on the Green allows attendees to partake in unlimited wine and beer plus lots of delicious gourmet food from local restaurants and food vendors, while raising funds for the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group (SCCBG). The 10th annual Gourmet Grazing is on Sat Sept 21, 2013 from 12-4 p.m. at Aptos Village Park.

The event usually sells out a few days ahead of time, so it’s recommended that you buy tickets immediately. Purchase tickets for $65 at New Leaf Community Market or online. If you have a group of 10, you can get tickets for $50 each. Admission includes food, wine, beer, a souvenir wineglass, and live music.

SCCBG board member Mary Anne Carson explains the festival’s popularity: “We offer the ‘best of Santa Cruz County’ all in one beautiful spot for a great value! Grazing is a delight for all of the senses: smell, sight, sound, touch and best of all, taste! We’ve offered high quality at a great value for the past 10 years which is why this event has a strong loyal following and will sell out!  Every year there is something new and every year the food purveyors, restaurants and chefs have become more creative.”  Some of my favorite dishes from last year’s festival included The Whole Enchilada’s squash blossom and zucchini tamale with avocado green salsa, and Café Cruz’s Southwestern gazpacho with shrimp. For more 2012 highlights, see my recap article.

There are more than 30 participating restaurants and food vendors for 2013 including The Crow’s Nest, Café Cruz, Penny Ice Creamery, The Whole Enchilada, Fresh Prep Kitchens, Solaire Restaurant and Bar, Hula’s, The Fish Lady, New Leaf Community Markets, Friend in Cheeses Jam Co., Niman Ranch, Redwood Hill Farm, Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine, Sweet Cheeks Bakeshop, and True Olive Connection. For the full list of participating restaurants, wineries, breweries, and exhibitors, click here.

All funds raised by SCCBG through events stay local. “We’ve raised well over $1 million since our inception in 1995 for the benefit of and distribution to local cancer support groups and cancer research at UCSC,” says Mary Anne Carson. “This is one of the hardest working, most passionate group of individuals I’ve ever encountered. SCCBG is an all volunteer organization.” Proceeds from SCCBG’s events, including this year’s Gourmet Grazing, benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support Services, The Katz Cancer Resource Center, UCSC Cancer Research, and WomenCARE. Last year the event raised more than $65,000 (up from $56,000 in 2011).

Back to school ideas with strawberries, plus recipe

Strawberries can be a healthy part of back to school season

Strawberries can be a healthy part of back to school season

As I mentioned in my article a few days ago, it’s back-to-school season. Lots of families are searching for solutions to make lunch, snacks and weekday meals fun and healthy while not spending a lot of money. Using fruits and vegetables can help, and the
California Strawberries web site is one resource for tips and recipes including one lunchbox item called “Berry Good Wraps.” Strawberries are recommended by many health professionals as part of a healthy diet.

Interesting fact: More than 1.7 billion pounds of strawberries are annually harvested by nearly 400 family farmers in California. This includes 793 million pounds between April-November in the Watsonville and Salinas areas. Almost every strawberry that is eaten in the United States is hand-picked by someone in California.

One recipe that the California Strawberries site features is “Grilled Salmon with Strawberry Ginger Salsa,” which can be a satisfying weekday family dinner. Also, as the recipe mentions, you can substitute another fish filet of your choice, whether it’s something that your kids enjoy more than salmon or something that goes on sale at your local market. Bon Appetit!

Recipe: Grilled Salmon with Strawberry Ginger Salsa
Ingredients

Salsa:
Prepare at least one hour ahead.
1 English or seedless cucumber, finely chopped
1 green onion, thinly sliced
1 tbsp. cilantro, cut into strips
3-4 tbsp. seasoned rice wine vinegar
2 cups fresh California strawberries, hulled and diced small
1 yellow pepper

Sauce:
1 stick unsalted butter
1 clove garlic
1 tbsp. honey
2 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

6 Salmon fillets (or fish of your choice), skinless

Directions
Mix cucumbers, green onion, cilantro, yellow pepper and vinegar. Cover and chill at least one hour. Just before serving, add strawberries. In a small saucepan melt butter with garlic over low heat. Stir in honey, soy sauce and lemon juice and cook 2 minutes, set aside. Prepare a charcoal grill, when ready brush sauce on salmon pieces and place on a well-oiled fish grilling rack. Place rack over coals about 4 inches from fire and grill approximately 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Brush with the sauce again after turning, and again when done. Transfer to warm platter and top with salsa.
Yield: 6 servings.
