2012 Hop N’ Barley Fest at Skypark in Scotts Valley

On June 29, Sky Park in Scotts Valley hosts the 4th annual Hop N’ Barley beer and bbq festival with lots of beer selections plus food and kids’ activities. Hop N’ Barley benefits the non-profit Community Housing Land Trust of Santa Cruz County. The organization is “…dedicated to providing a broad range of housing opportunities, with emphasis on ownership, that will remain affordable in perpetuity to very low, low and moderate-income residents of Santa Cruz County.”

There are approximately 60 breweries participating, including local Santa Cruz Ale Works, Discretion Brewing, Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing, Corralitos Brewing, and Seabright Brewery. Others include Sierra Nevada, Big Sky Brewing Co., and Alaskan Brewing Co. Last year’s event drew 4,500 people!

There will be a kids area, free parking, a skate park, and bands including The Harmed Brothers (11:30 a.m.), Extra Large, Wooster (4 p.m.), and The Joint Chiefs performing live music on two stages. Also, it’s a dog-friendly event. Food will be available to purchase from various restaurants and vendors. Festival organizers recommend bringing hats and sunscreen as there is not a lot of shade at the event.

Gates open at 10 a.m. for “early wristbanders,” and tasting is noon to 5 p.m. For those drinking beer, admission is $39 in advance/$45 at the door and includes a souvenir glass. The event has free admission for kids, designated drivers, and anyone else not drinking alcohol. Buy tickets online.

Santa Cruz June 2013 restaurant news includes two closings and one opening

Food from Booka during the restaurant’s “soft opening” over Memorial Day Weekend

Here are some highlights of recent restaurant news for Santa Cruz and nearby neighborhoods, which includes an opening, a couple closings and one change.

Recently Opened

In late May, the restaurant Booka opened up in the former location of Ristorante Barolo (inside the Bayview Hotel in Aptos).  Currently Booka is open Tue-Sat from 11:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. and 5:30 – 10 p.m., and Sun from 11 a.m.  – 3 p.m. The menu features fusion cuisine with a broad range items such as Caribbean Ceviche, focaccia (made in-house), and a signature burger that includes lamb (ground in-house), smoked paprika aioli, and filet mignon!

Heavenly Café in Scotts Valley is no longer open

Recently Changed

Pizzeria Avanti

Pizzeria Avanti used to be open several days a week for lunch; although that has ended, the restaurant is now open earlier and serving breakfast on certain days (Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon). It might add more breakfast days in the future, too. Scrambles, frittatas, French toast (made with bread from Gayle’s Bakery) and fried-egg sandwiches are available, plus poached eggs on fresh tomatoes with basil cream sauce. Breakfast pizzas will be added in the next few weeks. I recently enjoyed dinner-to-go from this pizzeria and can recommend the pizza with housemade sausage, fresh ricotta, and hot peppers plus the Caesar Salad with wonderful, very creamy dressing.

New hours:

  • Fri & Sat 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 5-9:30 p.m.
  • Sun & Mon 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.

Chocolate chip cookies from Sweet Cheeks Santa Cruz, a participant in the 2013 Bonny Doon Art & Wine Festival

The 2013 Bonny Doon Art & Wine Festival, offering a variety of food from restaurants and vendors plus wine, beer, music, and art, takes place on Sat June 22, 2013 from 1-6p.m.

The 21-and-over event, held at Vigné Farms Equestrian Park, raises funds to support the art, science, and music programs for the children of Bonny Doon School. The $50 all-inclusive ticket to the 11th Annual Bonny Doon Art and Wine Festival includes food, wine, beer, music, live and silent auctions, and artist demonstrations (selected artwork will be available for purchase). The event is run by volunteers so 100% of the proceeds go to Bonny Doon Elementary School. Last year more than $29,000 was raised! Visit event site for more details.

I recently had the opportunity to taste chocolate chip cookies from Sweet Cheeks Santa Cruz, one of the food vendors participating in this year’s festival. These cookies were very moist and quite delicious, and I never would have guessed that—like all Sweet Cheeks products—they are gluten-free! Sweet Cheeks owner Rose Calucchia is excited to be at the event with her chocolate chip cookies, double chocolate chunk cookies, and lemon pound cake. Read more about Rose and her sweet company and see photos of all the treats, including cupcakes and pies, at the Sweet Cheeks web site.

Participating wineries include

  • Beauregard Vineyards
  • Cave Gulch Winery
  • Hallcrest Vineyards
  • Hunter Hill Vineyard & Winery
  • McHenry Vineyard
  • Ridge Vineyards

Win free dinner at Santa Cruz restaurant Oswald & learn about Wed discount dinners

Halibut dinner entree on Wed May 29, 2013 at Santa Cruz restaurant Oswald

Halibut dinner entree on Wed May 29, 2013 at Santa Cruz restaurant Oswald

Downtown Santa Cruz restaurant Oswald has graciously agreed to give away a gift certificate for free Wednesday dinner for two to one of my Examiner.com or SantaCruzFoodie.com readers. See end of article for how to enter, and keep reading for more on Oswald.

The wonderful Oswald, with delicious creations by Chef Damani Thomas, has been offering special three-course prix fixe dinners on Wednesday evenings for about three years now. The dinners cost $29; guests choose one appetizer, one entrée, and one dessert. For each of the three courses, you have three selections to pick from.

I dined at Oswald on Wed. May 29 and truly enjoyed the prix fixe dinner. My appetizer was a pea soup with crème fraiche and mint and it was simply delightful: smooth, savory, and seasoned well. Other choices included sautéed prawns with coconut oil, dates, hearts of palm and citrus. For an entrée, I selected Alaskan halibut with broccoli, salsify (a root vegetable, sort of like a parsnip), and lemon-kumquat sauce, and was immensely satisfied. The fish was moist and tender, and the vegetables and sauce, with the sauce having both sweetness and tartness, provided the right contrast. Plus the dish had a gorgeous appearance, which always makes me enjoy food more (see photo above).

My dining companion chose an entrée of roasted chicken with shelling beans, snap peas, and orange reduction. He was very happy that he selected this – it was actually by default since he often eats red meat but there wasn’t any on the prix fixe menu that night. His second choice would have been fish but I’d already chosen that and he wanted to order something different. It’s not common for a restaurant to do chicken so well that you talk about it for a couple days, but that’s what Oswald did. The meat was perfectly cooked moist with crispy skin, the sauce had a great citrus flavor, and the beans successfully complemented the chicken. For dessert, the vanilla crème brulee dessert hit the spot with its creamy filling and cooked-exactly-right crisp caramelized top. In a word? Yum.

The restaurant serves dinner Tuesday-Sunday beginning at 5:30pm, and lunch on Fridays only from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Visit Oswald at 121 Soquel Avenue (at Front), Santa Cruz; call (831) 423-7427 for reservations.

Chipotle Mexican Grill offers new tofu filling and free San Francisco festival

Salad with sofritas filling, bell peppers, and fresh corn salsa from Santa Cruz restaurant Chipotle

Salad with sofritas filling, bell peppers, and fresh corn salsa from Santa Cruz restaurant Chipotle

Chipotle Mexican Grill has a couple pieces of news: it recently added sofritas, a tofu filling, as a choice for its burritos, tacos and salads in its Northern California locations, and it’s hosting a San Francisco festival this weekend.

First, let’s discuss the sofritas, which you can see in the image at the top of this article (in that case it was used as a salad topping with Chipotle’s fresh corn salsa). Sofritas has been available at Chipotle’s Northern California locations since mid-April and is made from shredded tofu braised with chipotle chilis, roasted poblanos, and a blend of aromatic spices. Chipotle uses organic, non-GMO tofu from Oakland’s Hodo Soy. As Chipotle has announced, sofritas is available in burritos, tacos, burrito bowls, and salads, and can be combined with other signature ingredients including white or brown cilantro-lime rice, pinto beans or vegetarian black beans, house-made salsas and guacamole, and cheese or sour cream. I have enjoyed the sofritas a couple times now, and highly recommend it for your next Chipotle visit.

Next, the festival: on Saturday, June 8, Chipotle is hosting the free festival “Cultivate San Francisco.” It’s from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Golden Gate Park at Hellman Hollow and includes cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs, live music, local food artisans, regional beer and wines, a special Chipotle festival menu, and other activities emphasizing fresh and affordable food made with sustainable ingredients. Chipotle’s menu for the festival, with items ranging between $5 and $7, will include a grilled flatbread gordita; chicken and sofritas tacos; charred esquites (corn) salad; and a jasmine rice bowl with pork and chicken meatballs or organic tofu from ShopHouse Southeast Asian Kitchen, Chipotle’s Asian concept. Other offerings include an Artisan Hall with lots of Bay Area food vendors selling items (a full list is below) plus a special “Cultivate Farmhouse Ale” created in partnership with SF’s Speakesasy Ales and Lagers.

Chipotle created the Cultivate Festival in 2011 as a way to raise awareness of the impact food has on society. The festival is intended to get people thinking and talking about food and food issues. The first one was in Chicago; in 2012 there were events in Chicago and Denver; this year there are Chicago & Denver events plus SF.

Chefs scheduled to speak and cook at Cultivate San Francisco include Richard Blais (The Spence, HD1, and Flip Burger Boutique in Atlanta); Michael Chiarello (Bottega in Napa Valley and Coqueta in San Francisco); Amanda Freitag (Food Network’s “Chopped” and “The Next Iron Chef”); Sarah and Evan Rich (Rich Table in San Francisco); Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo (Animal, Son of a Gun in Los Angeles) with Ludo Lefebvre (Trois Mec in Los Angeles); Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen (San Francisco); and Nate Appleman and Joel Holland (Chipotle Culinary Team). The musical lineup includes Mayer Hawthorne, The Walkmen, Walk the Moon, LP, and Matt Costa.

Two Shakespeare Santa Cruz events including Woodstock’s Pizza benefit

Pizza from Woodstock's in Santa Cruz

Pizza from Woodstock’s in Santa Cruz

On Tuesday June 4, 2013, there are two events related to UCSC’s Shakespeare Santa Cruz (SSC), and one is a win-win for local pizza fans.

Pizza Benefit at Woodstock’s

Woodstock’s Pizza is donating a percentage of its dinner sales (good for dine-in AND to-go) between 5 p.m.  and 9 p.m. to SSC – but ONLY for the customers that bring in a special flyer (click here). In case you’ve never been to Woodstock’s, it offers a lot of tasty pizza choices (including whole wheat, white, and gluten-free crust options), several salads (including organic spinach with almonds, dried cranberries, and organic balsamic dressing), and a decent beer selection. There is a huge amount of seating including a pleasant outdoor patio. Spread the word: depending on how much money SSC fans spend at Woodstock’s that night, SSC – a fabulous repertory theater company –  will receive between 15% and 25% of these sales.

Season Preview at Bookshop SC

At 7:30 p.m., SSC Artistic Director Marco Barricelli is speaking at Bookshop Santa Cruz. He will introduce the 2013 summer festival season, share set and costume designs, and answer attendee questions.

Interested in going to a SSC play? The main 2013 SSC season starts July 23 and lasts until September 1. This year’s plays are Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew and Henry V. There is also a show that features SSC’s acting interns, always referred to as “The Fringe Show.” This year, they’re performing Tom Jones, adapted by Jon Jory from the novel by Henry Fielding, on August 20 & 27. All of this season’s performances are on UCSC’s campus at the outdoor Festival Glen. For more information or tickets visit shakespearesantacruz.org or call (831) 459-2159.
