The third annual “A Taste of Soquel,” with plenty of food from local restaurants plus wine and music, will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. Last year’s Taste of Soquel raised enough money to provide meals for over 20,000 children in Santa Cruz County.

The event is Saturday, September 24 from 11am-4pm at the Congregational Church of Soquel. Local restaurants, wineries, and musicians are joining together for a very worthy cause. Adults pay $20 and receive a souvenir glass as well as food and wine tastings at all festival booths. Attendees ages 12-20 pay $10 and receive food booth tastings (there will be complimentary kids’ beverages). Kids under 12 are free. There will also be live music all day. For more information see event web site.

You can buy tickets at the door or in advance via the church (4951 Soquel Drive, Soquel, (831) 475-2867). There will be a raffle with more than 50 prizes from local businesses– these tickets will only be sold at the event. Prizes include gift certificates to Safeway, Little People’s Store, Aldo’s Bakery, and Home Depot and items from businesses such as Starbucks and Everett Family Farms.

Participating Soquel restaurants are Aldo’s, Carpo’s, El Chipotle, D’Anna’s Deli, The Fish Lady, Main Street Garden & Café, Sawasdee, Michael’s on Main and Tortilla Flats. Soquel’s Fogline Farm will also provide food. Participating local wineries are Bargetto Winery, Hunter Hill, Poetic Cellars, and Soquel Vineyards.

KPIG DJ Ralph Anybody is emceeing the live musicians: Celina and the C Monkeys, Farmer’s Market String Band, Brian Quinn Group, and Bryn Loosley & the Back Pages.

There will be children’s activities such as supervised games and crafts, face painting, and music. You’ll also want to stop by the hospitality table – it offers complimentary coffee, tea, lemonade, ice water, and food from the Bagelry and Donut Station.

Santa Cruz Restaurant Openings and Closings including Café Gratitude opening

Fresh fruit parfait from Cafe Gratitude

In Santa Cruz restaurant news, there have been a number of recent openings and closings, including the opening of vegan restaurant Cafe Gratitude. Here are a couple highlights:

Closings: Asana Teahouse and Coldwater Grill (formerly Hawg’s) are no longer open.

Although the physical venue isn’t open anymore, Asana does still have tea and teaware available for purchase. Email asanateas@gmail.com to request the company’s current inventory and price list.

Openings: Organic, vegan Café Gratitude is now open in the former downtown Santa Cruz Asana site at 103 Lincoln (near Pacific). Look for a review in the coming weeks after I try their food, but for now I can tell you several details about the restaurant. It’s part of an eight-restaurant chain that includes two locations inside Whole Foods Markets. I look forward to tasting the food from Café Gratitude; I saw owners Terces and Matthew Engelhart speak three or four years ago at the now-closed bookstore Gateways. Even then, they spoke of wanting to open a Santa Cruz location of Café Gratitude and mentioned they have family here (Matthew Manzo, who serves as general manager of the new branch).

Santa Cruz’s Café Gratitude is open daily from 10am-10pm. There are other locations in San Francisco (the first branch, it opened in 2004), Oakland, Healdsburg, San Rafael, Cupertino, and Los Angeles (the most recent branch before Santa Cruz). The organic, vegan food it serves is free of refined sugar, flour, and additives.  View the restaurant’s menu; not all selections are available at every location. As you’ll notice when perusing the menu, items have unusual names that are affirmations. To receive a dish with almond hummus, olive tapenade, live falafels and more, you have to say “I am complete.” If you want Gratitude’s version of Macaroni and Cheese (zucchini noodles and sun-dried tomatoes in a cashew cheese sauce), say “I am comforted.”

Café Gratitude has long been known for a raw (or “live”) foods menu and has expanded to offer cooked foods in some locations.  Over 45% of Café Gratitude’s produce comes from its Be Love Farm. To learn more, visit the restaurant at 103 Lincoln Street, call (831) 427-9583, or visit cafegratitude.com.

SCCBG has funded cancer research and local groups — including many that support people living with cancer — since 1995. The organization was started by a small group of friends who used to play tennis together once a week; they had each lost a relative or friend to cancer and wanted to do something to make a difference. The first event the group hosted was a Spring Forward Against Cancer Tennis Tournament and Celebration; these tournaments are still held each year. Proceeds from SCCBG’s events, including this year’s Gourmet Grazing, benefit these local cancer support and research organizations: Hospice of Santa Cruz County, Jacob’s Heart Children’s Cancer Support and Services, The Katz Cancer Resource Center, UCSC Cancer Research, and WomenCARE.

Homeless Garden Project in Santa Cruz hosts organic, farm-to-table benefit dinner

Guests at an HGP “Sustain” event at the farm in July. Photo credit: Dana Forsberg

Santa Cruz’s Homeless Garden Project (HGP) is holding an organic benefit dinner at its farm on Sunday, September 18, the latest in its “Sustain” series.

“Sustain” promises seasonal gourmet dinners that feature organic ingredients from the farm, wine pairings, and guest speakers discussing sustainable topics.

This Sunday’s event is from 4-7pm, and the featured crop is scrumptious padron peppers – if you haven’t yet tried this pepper, you’re in for a treat. See menu below. The four-course dinner will be prepared by Chef Joshua Server of Conscious Creations, and will also include seafood from H&H Fresh Fish and items from Companion Bakery. The meal includes wine pairings from Hillcrest Terrace Winery. Tickets cost $60; buy online. Unless the event sells out earlier, which has happened in the past, online sales will close on Saturday Sept 17th at 5 PM. For more information call 831.426.3609.

The setting is outdoors (the farm is located off Shaffer Road near the entrance to Seymour Center), so be sure to dress comfortably and bring a jacket. The speakers at this event will be Hans Haveman and Heidi Rhodes of H&H Fresh Fish. Hans will speak about fishing sustainably and how that ties into local food and community. Heidi will talk about H&H’s new CSS (Community Shared Seafood) program, an easy way for local residents to get fresh, sustainable fish each week. For some background on H&H, read my recent Santa Cruz Sentinel article which highlights the CSS program plus six local, unusual CSAs.

MENU

(choice of vegetarian or non-vegetarian; please specify when buying ticket)

  • Roasted HGP Padron Peppers
  • Farm Fresh Bruschetta with dry farmed tomatoes on Companion Bakery crostini
  • September Salad with HGP baby arugula, edible flowers, and a balsamic herb vinaigrette
  • Miso Minestrone Soup featuring HGP beans and carrots
  • Curried Sustainable H&H “Catch-of-the-Day” with an HGP fall vegetable rice pilaf OR
  • Curried Carrots, Lentils & Yams with an HGP fall vegetable rice pilaf (vegan)
  • Vegan Chocolate Banana Bread topped with HGP Strawberry Gelato

Also — if you want to join HGP’s organic CSA for the remainder of the season (through late October), weekly shares are still available at pro-rated costs for both “pick-up” and “u-pick” options. HGP’s bounty includes organic vegetables plus sweet, tasty strawberries and beautiful flowers. For more information or to sign up, call 831.423.1020 or go to www.homelessgardenproject.org. At the site you can also find out about donating to the CSA Scholarship Fund, which helps low-income individuals and currently sponsors food and flower donations to organizations such as Santa Cruz AIDS Project and Women’s Crisis Support.

Founded in 1990, HGP provides job training and transitional employment to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Some of the programs take place in its 2.5-acre organic farm, where trainees plant, grow and harvest. HGP also provides volunteer and educational opportunities for community members who want to learn about and practice sustainable agriculture and social justice, and operates a year-round gift shop.

Sabieng Thai Cuisine in Santa Cruz temporarily closed; try owners’ Scotts Valley spot

The wonderful and popular Santa Cruz restaurant Sabieng Thai Cuisine is temporarily closed due to a fire, but Sabieng’s owners do operate another Thai restaurant in Scotts Valley that remains open.

Sabieng, located in Westside Santa Cruz, had a kitchen fire on September 1. It’s estimated that the repairs will take approximately three months. The owners also plan to take this opportunity to make some improvements as they perform repairs.

In May of this year, the owners of Sabieng — including Thailand native Wanlop Kachinthorn — opened a new Thai restaurant in Scotts Valley called Kao Sook. Located in the former location of Bruno’s Barbecue, Kao Sook serves a huge variety of dishes ranging from appetizers (like satay or deep-fried sweet potatoes) to affordable lunch specials (like Pad Se Ew with your choice of meat) to dinner entrees (such as curries, stir-fries, and noodles dishes like Pad Thai). Beverages include Thai iced tea, soft drinks, beer, and wine.

Kao Sook Hours: Mon-Fri 11am-9pm, Sat-Sun Noon-9pm

Kao Sook Location: 245H Mt. Hermon Road, Scotts Valley, (831) 439-9520

Farm-to-Fork Organic Benefit Dinner for UC Santa Cruz farm apprentice program

Apprentices planting at the farm (photo courtesy of CASFS)

If you attend the organic Farm-to-Fork benefit dinner for UC Santa Cruz’s farm apprentice program, you will simultaneously enjoy yourself and support a great cause.

The gourmet dinner takes place on Sunday September 11 at the UCSC Farm (located on campus at 1156 High St.) and celebrates the work of the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS). All proceeds will support scholarships for participants in the CASFS Apprenticeship training of new organic farmers and gardeners – officially the Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture program. Tickets cost $125; purchase online. For more information, call (831) 459-3240 or email casfs@ucsc.edu. Guests are invited to bring their own plate for the main course. For directions to parking, click here — allow at least 20 minutes to park and walk or catch a free shuttle to the Farm.

The Farm-to-Fork event begins at 3pm with a Farm tour and silent auction. The first course of dinner will be served at 4pm. The meal will have five courses, all created with organic ingredients from the UCSC Farm & Garden and other local farms and ranches. Attendees get to pick their entrée from a choice of grass-fed Fogline Farm pork or chicken, and all courses will include full vegetarian options – see menu below. A variety of organic wines will accompany the dinner. Dinner will be prepared and served by students in the Apprenticeship program under the direction of Chef Matthew Raiford, a member of this year’s Apprenticeship class. Most recently, Chef Raiford was the Executive Chef for Haute Catering in Washington D.C., the premier catering company for the U.S. House of Representatives, Canadian Embassy, Pentagon Conference Center and the National Archive.

The internationally known Apprenticeship Program at UC Santa Cruz has trained over 1,400 organic farmers and gardeners during the last 40 years. Many have started their own training and apprenticeship programs on farms and at urban agriculture projects, a great example of paying it forward. The program draws more than 50 percent women each year at a time when fewer than 15 percent of U.S. farm operators are women.

CASFS manages the 2-acre Alan Chadwick Garden and the 25-acre Farm at UCSC, which are both open to the public. Both sites are managed using organic production methods and serve as research, teaching, and training facilities for students, staff, and faculty. CASFS is committed to increasing ecological sustainability and social justice in the food and agriculture system.

Free ice cream in Santa Cruz at Penny Ice Creamery for 1-year anniversary

The Penny Ice Creamery in downtown Santa Cruz

Organic Santa Cruz ice cream shop Penny Ice Creamery is celebrating its one-year anniversary by giving out free ice cream today: Wednesday August 24!

Here are the details:

From noon on Wednesday until they run out or until the store closes at 11pm, The Penny Ice Creamery is serving free single scoops to anyone who visits. There will be two free flavors, classic vanilla bean and a special birthday cake flavor.

Co-owners and friends Kendra Baker and Zachary Davis opened Penny on August 24, 2010. Santa Cruz residents – plus fans from the Bay Area and beyond – have embraced the delicious, handmade gourmet ice cream. The shop was voted Best Ice Cream by Santa Cruz Weekly’s Readers Poll and Best New Business by Good Times Santa Cruz’s Readers Poll.

Flavors rotate with the seasons and include local produce and ingredients from Santa Cruz companies such as Verve Coffee. Recent choices included basil, raspberry chocolate, blackberry corn, mascarpone hazelnut, and strawberry pink peppercorn. Penny’s ice cream can also be found at local farmers markets.

“It’s been absolutely amazing,” said Baker. “We had a dream, we went for it, and we’ve been on cloud nine ever since.” They’ve been so successful that they even opened a second venue in June across from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The Picnic Basket serves both savory items and the ice cream that made Penny’s owners so popular. Read my article on The Picnic Basket. Note, the beer and wine that was “coming soon” as of that article’s publication are now available; selections include Birichino wine and Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing ale.

Interested in details on Penny including its history? Read my overview article (since that article was published, the hours have changed: Penny is now open 7 days a week).

Cookbook author reading in Berkeley with Romney Steele of Plum Gorgeous

The beautiful new Plum Gorgeous: Recipes and Memories from the Orchard -- Credits: Andrews McMeel Publishing.

Talented Bay Area author Romney Steele published her new cookbook, “Plum Gorgeous: Recipes and Memories from the Orchard,” on July 19, 2011 and she’s giving a reading on August 23 in Berkeley to celebrate.

Oakland resident Steele is the featured presenter at this unique evening, a monthly event coordinated by the “Cooks’ Book Club of Fourth Street” in collaboration with retail shop Books Inc. and venues Café Rouge and The Pasta Shop. The event begins at 6pm at The Pasta Shop (1786 4th Street) with food created from cookbook recipes, plus conversation between Steele and Rachel Saunders, author of the fabulous Blue Chair Jam Cookbook. They will be discussing “their love of all things fruit.” There will also be a panel discussion around the corner at Books Inc. (1760 Fourth Street) led by food blogger Sarah Henry.

“Plum Gorgeous” follows Steele’s successful 2009 cookbook-memoir “My Nepenthe,” which received praise from food visionaries such as Michael Pollan and Deborah Madison. As the granddaughter of the creators of renowned Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur, the author grew up at the family business and opened Café Kevah, located on the grounds of Nepenthe. Steele’s new book has 60 seasonally inspired recipes; some of these recall the year the author spent living in a Big Sur orchard. Savory recipes include Coriander Steak with Blackberry Vinaigrette, Blueberry Lemon Thyme Risotto, Fig Relish and Ham Sandwiches, and Kumquat Couscous Salad with Fried Haloumi Cheese. Sweet concoctions include Passionfruit Chocolate Truffles, Lemon Almond Cake, and Plum Soup with Basil Ice Cream. The beautiful book also features vivid color photographs by Sara Remington.

Something that Steele mentions in the introduction is her approach to recipes, which is refreshing. She encourages readers: “Use your imagination; feel free to substitute one fruit for another.” For example, she suggests making Pink Grapefruit Cassis Granita with blood orange juice, or switching blackberries for plums in a tart recipe. That is the best kind of cookbook, one that teaches and offers guidance while simultaneously offering flexibility and provoking creativity.

Monthly Cooks’ Book Club events occur on the fourth Tuesday of each month and rotate between three locations: Books Inc. and venues Café Rouge and The Pasta Shop. Wine and food are served, and attendees enjoy conversation with the authors plus recipes. Books and ingredients are always available for purchase. For more information, call (510) 250-6055.

If you can’t make this appearance, Steele will be at Readers’ Books in Sonoma on Saturday, August 27 at 2:30 pm. Learn more about Steele at her web site, http://www.romneysteele.com/.

Wine and chocolate pairing in San Jose with Skov Winery & Dolce Bella Chocolates

Masala chocolate from Dolce Bella

Skov Winery and Dolce Bella Chocolates are joining forces to satiate you with a wine and chocolate pairing on Friday August 19 at 7pm in San Jose. The event takes place at Dolce Bella Chocolate Café; reservations are required (call the cafe at 408-446-4296).

The pairing will feature four wines from Skov (Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel) plus four extremely delicious, decadent chocolates made by Dolce Bella. Tasting fees will be $16 per person. In addition, attendees can purchase bottles of wine and other foods and chocolates from the cafe.

Scotts Valley-based Skov Winery was opened earlier this year by Annette and David Hunt, former owners of local Roudon-Smith Winery.

Dolce Bella chocolatier Audrey Vaggione is a local: she’s a graduate of UC Santa Cruz. She went on to graduate from the California Culinary Academy (baking and pastry arts). The chocolates she creates include intriguing ingredients such as raspberries, citrus, flowers, and herbs, adding vibrant flavors to the confections. In the past I have enjoyed these chocolates at events such as the Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival, where I tried Meyer lemon (white-chocolate ganache made with fresh Meyer lemons and Tahitian vanilla in a dark-chocolate shell) and Masala (fresh ginger, toasted cardamom and black pepper in bittersweet ganache in a dark chocolate shell). Dolce Bella’s awards include “Grand Master” in 2011, First Place for “Most Luxurious Chocolate Experience” in 2009 and 2010 and Second Place for “Top Artisan Chocolatier” in 2009 and 2010 at the San Francisco International Chocolate Salon.

Dolce Bella Chocolate Café is at Westgate West Shopping Center 5325 Prospect Rd., San Jose, 95129. The café serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 8am-6pm Mon-Wed, 8am-10pm Thurs-Sat, and 9am-6pm Sunday.

For more information, contact Skov Winery at (831) 438-4374 or  wines@scottsvalleywinery.com, or Dolce Bella Chocolate Café at (408) 446-4296.
