Santa Cruz’s Homeless Garden Project offers organic CSA subscriptions

Santa Cruz’s Homeless Garden Project (HGP) is currently selling subscriptions to its organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture), which runs from May-October. I have been a CSA member in the past; subscribers receive a fabulous weekly bounty while supporting a very worthwhile cause.

Customers can choose from 3 CSA options for five months of wonderful, fresh produce including a variety of organic vegetables plus sweet, tasty strawberries and beautiful flowers. Selections are:

  • “Pick-up” ($650; this share feeds approximately 4 adults and is harvested by the trainees and volunteers and picked up every Friday)
  • “U-Pick” ($500; this also feeds about 4 adults and YOU do the harvesting on Friday or Saturday)
  • “Half-share U-Pick” ($300)

For more information or to sign up, call 831.423.1020 or go to www.homelessgardenproject.org. At the site you can also find out about donating to the CSA Scholarship Fund, which helps low-income individuals and currently sponsors food and flower donations to organizations such as Santa Cruz AIDS Project and Women’s Crisis Support.

From May 27-October 28, CSA members will make weekly visits to HGP’s farm at Natural Bridges and either pick up the already-harvested items or do the harvesting themselves. In the past, if CSA members did the “pick-up” option, they would go to HGP’s office/gift shop at Depot Park. Moving the location to the farm gives members a chance to connect to the land where their food is grown; even if they don’t choose to do their own picking, they see where the flowers and produce come from. As the great author and farmer Wendell Berry wrote, “For good farming to last, it must occur in a good farming community, that is, a neighborhood of people who know each other, who understand their mutual dependencies, and who place a proper value on good farming.”

Founded in 1990, HGP provides job training and transitional employment to people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Some of the programs take place in its 2.5-acre organic farm, where trainees plant, grow and harvest. HGP also provides volunteer and educational opportunities for community members who want to learn about and practice sustainable agriculture and social justice, and operates a year-round gift shop. This boutique sells items like beeswax candles, t-shirts, hand-knitted scarves, dried flower wreaths, sachets, strawberry jam, and herb vinegars (selected products made from herbs, flowers, and fruit grown at the farm).

Store Location/Hours: 30 West Cliff Drive (next to Depot Park), 831-426-3609. Open Tue & Fri 10-5, Mon, Wed, Thurs 10-3.

Read about a free online resource/oral history series for learning about the history of California Central Coast’s organic farming and sustainable agriculture in this article. The series includes interviews with HGP Director of Programs and Operations Darrie Ganzhorn and Garden Director Paul Glowaski.

Penny Ice Creamery: Free treats for movie patrons & UC Santa Cruz plant lovers

Organic ice cream from Santa Cruz's Penny Ice Creamery

Organic Santa Cruz ice cream shop Penny Ice Creamery has partnered with a few community venues, the Nickelodeon and Del Mar movie theaters and UC Santa Cruz, to give out free treats.

First, the movie and ice cream promotion: if you see a film at the Nickelodeon or Del Mar movie theaters (Nickelodeon is 210 Lincoln St., Del Mar is 1124 Pacific Ave.), save your ticket stub and present it to Penny for a “buy one scoop, get 2nd scoop free” offer. It’s only valid if you go the ice cream shop on the same day you see a film at one of the two theaters. This very sweet offer is good for the foreseeable future (no promotion end date has been announced).

Next, the UCSC promotion: this weekend (April 30 & May 1) is the 2011 Spring Plant Sale hosted by the UCSC Farm & Garden. If you go to the sale on Saturday, you get to taste Penny Ice Creamery limited-edition popsicles, available for ONE DAY ONLY and made especially for the sale with ingredients from the campus Farm & Garden.

Also, El Salchichero (see article about the charcuterie business) and Penny are offering a 10% discount at their retail stores, and Companion Bakers is offering a 10% discount at their farmers market stands during the week following the plant sale when you present your receipt from the sale. The plant sale offers a huge range of organically grown plants for the garden and landscape, including flower, herb, and vegetable starts, perennials, and grasses. It’s from 10am-3pm Saturday (with a 9am entrance for members of Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden) and 10am-2pm Sunday. The location: Barn Theater, corner of Bay & High Streets at the base of the UCSC campus. The sale is co-sponsored by CASFS (UCSC’s Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems); learn about this extraordinary program.

If you want all the dish on Penny including its history, read this comprehensive article (since that article was published, the hours have changed: beginning last January, Penny is now open 7 days a week).

Santa Cruz Downtown Farmers Market expands hours and celebrates Earth Day

The Santa Cruz Downtown Farmers Market is expanding its hours, and the market celebrates Wednesday April 20, 2011 with a party for Earth Day.

Starting April 20, the downtown farmers market will now open at 1:30pm each Wednesday instead of 2:30pm, so you have an extra hour to get your farm-fresh produce and/or buy a meal from one of the many vendors selling ready-to-eat food and drinks (see ready-to-eat and farm vendor list). Choices include Indian and Mexican food, and rotisserie chicken. These expanded hours will last until Thanksgiving week. Between Thanksgiving and the week after Daylight Savings Time, hours will be shortened to 1:30-5:30pm (closing one hour earlier than usual).

The annual Earth Day celebration offers music, activities for both adults and kids, and speakers plus booths from groups like Slow Food Santa Cruz, Ecology Action, and The Clean Ocean Project. Speakers include author and activist John Robbins and Councilwoman Lynn Robinson.

Food and wine highlights at Skov and other wineries: this weekend’s Santa Cruz Mountains Passport event

The Santa Cruz Mountains Spring Passport day is Saturday, April 16 – and I’ve listed a few food and wine highlights below including food served at Skov and other wineries.

For those unfamiliar with the “Passport” program, the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association offers this event four times a year, and Saturday is the Spring event (the other event days are on the third Saturday of January, July and November). Passport is an opportunity to meet the winemakers of SCM (the Santa Cruz Mountains), to see where and how they produce their wines, and — at selected wineries — the chance to try new releases or special barrel samples.

Skov Winery is serving wine and cheese on Saturday. Read my comprehensive article on Skov. Tabitha and her company Friend in Cheeses will take participants “on a culinary journey of Skov wines and foods from what the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation has to offer.” Tabitha says, “Spring is in the air and the goats are giving us amazing milk. Taste the terroir with a variety of goats milk cheeses from Cheddar to Chevre.” Skov winery will be offering samples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Zinfandel. The $10 tasting fee per person includes cheese and wine tasting plus asouvenir wine glass. Complimentary tasting for Passport holders and Skov Wine Club members.  SCM Passports will be available for sale the day of the event for $40 each.

Location: 2364 Bean Creek Road, Scotts Valley 95066.

Vine Hill Winery is serving a cheese and wine pairing on Saturday and Sunday featuring Triple Creams and Port Salut. The cost: free to Passport holders and Vine Hill Wine Club members, and $5 otherwise. Both Saturday and Sunday the winery will be open from noon to 5pm, and there will be box lunches available for purchase. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic.

Location: 2300 Jarvis Road, Santa Cruz 95065.

Alfaro Winery offers live music and wine tasting plus complimentary snacks. Enjoy classical guitar from Salvador Magallon from 11am-1:30pm and Americana/blues from Mondo Blue from 1:30-5pm. Admission is free for Passport holders and Alfaro Wine Club members and $10 for others.

Location: 420 Hames Road, Corralitos 95076.

Burrell School Vineyards & Winery is hosting wine tasting, plus Truffle Gateau will be sampling its Belgian chocolate baked truffles. The winery will also hold a special “Bunny Hop: Jelly Belly & Wine Pairing” event on Sunday, April 17, in conjunction with the Summit to Sea Wineries, which also include Loma Prieta, MJA Cellars and Poetic Cellars, all of whom will offer gourmet jelly bean and wine pairings.

Location: 24060 Summit Road, Los Gatos 95033.

There are dozens of other wineries participating this weekend including Ahlgren, Bargetto, Bonny Doon Vineyard, Equinox, La Nebbia, Pelican Ranch, Ridge, Santa Cruz  Mountain, Silver Mountain, Sones Cellars, Testarossa, and Zayante.

Passports are available to purchase at any participating winery on passport day. Each Passport covers tasting room fees for one person at all participating wineries. At each winery you visit, a page of your Passport will be stamped.  You must have your Passport with you in order to participate in the tasting.  Passport benefits are good for one visit to each participating winery and are for use on designated Passport days only.  Passports do not expire until each winery has been visited once.

The original Betty’s is in Seabright, and the second location on 41st Avenue opened in March 2010; at both of these spots customers order at the counter.

I will post more info on this location including details on the menu and hours very soon. On Twitter? Follow me @santacruzfoodie.
