Two restaurant events in Santa Cruz on Tuesday March 12

Food at Lago di Como Ristorante

Food at Lago di Como Ristorante

There are so many fun food- and restaurant-related events in Santa Cruz that it’s hard to keep up; here are two occurring on Tuesday, Mar. 12, 2013.

Winemakers Dinner at Lago di Como Ristorante & Pizzeria

Lago di Como Ristorante & Pizzeria, which opened in December, is having its first Winemakers Dinner. The cost is $62 for a six-course meal including wine pairings. Courses include salad, pasta, fish, and meat (the latter is top sirloin stuffed with artichoke, panko, Parmesan, with rosemary-white wine sauce and served atop garlic mashed potatoes). Read more and view the full menu at Lago’s Facebook page. The event begins at 6 p.m. and features winemakers from Treviso, Italy-based La Cantina Pizzolato Winery. Reservations will be accepted up until noon on Tuesday, via email (lagodicomosc@yahoo.com) or phone (831-454-8257). Read more about the restaurant here.

Location: Lago di Como Ristorante, 2-1490 East Cliff Dr., Santa Cruz

India Joze Persian New Year Ritual

Now Rooz, also known as Persian New Year, takes place each year at the same time as the vernal equinox. There are many celebratory rituals associated with this holiday, including one where people “jump over fire” (sometimes a mini-bonfire at the beach) while saying certain phrases to “get rid of the old and bring in the new.” India Joze is holding a few events related to Now Rooz; read more at the restaurant’s Facebook page. One event is on Tues. Mar. 12 from 7-9 p.m. There will be free Persian appetizers and desserts, plus an optional fire-jumping ritual, all right outside India Joze.

Location: India Joze, 418 Front Street, Santa Cruz

Recap of recent Dishcrawl Santa Cruz evening at downtown restaurants

Vegan food at Café Gratitude during Dishcrawl Santa Cruz's second outing

Vegan food at Café Gratitude during Dishcrawl Santa Cruz’s second outing

Dishcrawl Santa Cruz has had two events this year, each of them a fun outing to four different restaurants. The debut event was in January (read my recap article) and the second event—held last week, on Feb. 26—was also great fun. Both evenings offered the chance to meet new people, try new foods and/or restaurants, and participate in a unique community event.

The Feb. 26 event had about 15 diners, as opposed to the 40 who attended the first one. I don’t think the number of people made it better or worse, just different. January was a more lively experience and February was a more intimate one.

The basic premise of a Dishcrawl? You visit four restaurants within walking distance of each other, spending about 30-40 minutes in each venue. The company also operates events called “Neighborfood” and the first Santa Cruz one is April 14 (note: this is a change from the March 14 date announced in my last article). Buy tickets online for $40. With Neighborfood, you visit 8 restaurants on a Sunday afternoon. Instead of traveling with a large group, you go at your own pace – it’s a self-guided tour.

Last week, we began at El Palomar at 7pm, where we sat down and were immediately given tasty chips and salsa. A short time later, servers brought each of us a large plate overflowing with food: ceviche, chicken, carne asada, and beans. My favorite elements were the tender carne asada and the flavorful beans with Mexican cheese sprinkled on top.

Next, we visited Café Gratitude. It appeared that besides our host (Dishcrawl Santa Cruz ambassador Wes Katayama), I was the only person in the group who had ever dined at this vegan restaurant. We were quickly served platters of food, and the selections were quite tasty and fresh.   We dined on vegan sushi rolls, organic potatoes with “cashew nacho cheese” sauce (the dish is called “I am grounded” if you look for it on the menu), and polenta topped with mushroom ragout. It was a trio of dishes that worked well as a sampling of Café Gratitude’s offerings, and it seemed like Gratitude gained some new fans!  I’m very happy about that, especially after hearing that Café Gratitude has announced that “in appreciation of…service and safety provided to our community,” it’s offering free meals to all Santa Cruz Police Department officers for the rest of 2013. This business truly deserves our gratitude, for such a wonderful gesture. Feb. 26, the day of the Dishcrawl, was actually the day Santa Cruz lost two police offers and I am glad that I had the opportunity to interact with various folks in the community that evening.

Our third stop was Laili. Again, we received great service and great food, and I always enjoy the pleasant atmosphere of this restaurant. I was already quite full, but once I took the first bite, I had to keep going. We tasted small portions of three dishes: Pumpkin Boranee (a dip), the Silk Road Plate (hummus, babaghanoush, tabbouleh, cucumber yogurt), and Pomegranate Eggplant.

Last but not least, we visited Penny Ice Creamery for dessert. Co-owner Zach Davis presented us with special treats: a chocolate hazelnut napoleon (included cookies and mousse) in a bowl with blood oranges, a scoop of burnt
cinnamon ice cream, and organic whipped cream. Sounds yummy, right? It was even creamier and better than it sounds! In addition to the sweet treat, Davis gave an engaging speech about Penny’s history, practices (using local farms, etc.) and values. Because they have a state-regulated pasteurization facility and are licensed pasteurizers, they make their own ice cream base instead of buying a pre-mixed base (which can be 95-99% of the finished ice cream product).

I followed up with Davis a few days after the event, to get more details: “We uses only organic evaporated cane juice, organic free range eggs, and organic cream and milk, sourcing each ingredient individually,” says Davis. “We craft each complete recipe to optimize the flavor profile. Making our own base also allows us to use less sugar than many other ice creams. We do this because we like our flavors to emerge over the course of eating an entire scoop, and for this to happen the ice cream can’t be overly sweet.”

At the Dishcrawl, Davis briefly but sincerely reflected on the afternoon’s violent tragedy and thanked the attendees for participating in this kind of community event where people are walking the streets, engaging in the community, and connecting with each other. The next day, I noticed on Facebook that Davis had posted a very eloquent and touching piece regarding community. I want to share it here, with his permission. See below if you are interested.

Hope to see you at future Dishcrawl events, and other food- and community-related happenings in Santa Cruz. Follow me on Twitter @santacruzfoodie. Stay in the loop for future Dishcrawl Santa Cruz events by “liking” its Facebook page.

The Penny Ice Creamery’s status update, posted on Facebook Feb. 27:

“Yesterday Kendra and I attended the afternoon Santa Cruz City Council meeting in support of the future of Santa Cruz Open Streets, a wonderful event that builds community around health, art, education, music, and sustainability. Not long after Open Streets Director Saskia Lucas had given her presentation, we heard an unusual amount of sirens around city hall, and I could feel the energy in the room begin to change. Within minutes a recess was called, the council left the room, and then returned, visibly shaken, some in tears.

Later in the evening I was at the Penny to welcome and host a group of folks for the final course of Dishcrawl, a progressive dining event. At 9pm at night they had just walked over from Laili on Cooper Street, and piled into the shop excited and flushed from the cool night air.

As I greeted them I reflected on how much I love Santa Cruz. We are blessed with a beautiful setting yes, but we are also blessed with amazing people. People who put on events like Open Streets that bring thousands of us together to celebrate community. People who bring positive activity to our streets at night; their walking, talking, and breathing life into our downtown makes it so vibrant. And people who keep us safe; who wake up each morning with the mission of keeping Santa Cruz peaceful and secure.

Today I mourn the loss of two of those people. I cannot begin to understand the actions that would take them from us. What I can understand is that, in as much as I have the power, I will not let the actions of those few individuals that would do harm define me or my city. I will try to follow the lead of so many exceptional people around me, and do anything and everything I can to make Santa Cruz a wonderful place. In doing so I hope I can honor the ultimate sacrifice of those who worked so hard towards the same goal.

With respects and prayers to Sgt. Baker, Det. Butler, their families, and the SCPD.

Zachary Davis
Owner, The Penny Ice Creamery”

Representatives from award-winning Ideal Bar & Grill at the 32nd annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off and Festival

Here are some highlights of recent restaurant news for Santa Cruz and nearby neighborhoods, which includes several changes and a near-future opening: a second location for the owners of Sawasdee Thai Cuisine.

Opening Soon

Sawasdee in Santa Cruz

Soquel restaurant Sawasdee serves excellent Thai cuisine with very fresh ingredients, and I’m thrilled to hear that owners Bill and Dee Hongmanee are going to be opening a second location. They’re taking over the former space of Casablanca (101 Main Street in Santa Cruz), across from the beach near the Boardwalk. Bill hopes to be open by late March. Some of my favorite dishes at Sawasdee are fresh spring rolls, tom kha soup, pumpkin red curry (with succulent scallops plus tender prawns and chicken), and to finish a meal, dessert of sweet rice and mango.

Changes Hula’s – expanded lunch & happy hours

On February 19th, downtown Santa Cruz restaurant Hula’s Island Grill & Tiki Room expanded its lunch service. It’s now open for lunch six days a week: Tuesday-Sunday from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. The restaurant describes its cuisine as “tropical dining…a menu infused with Asian, Latin, and Caribbean touches, all with a Hawaiian inspiration.” Hula’s also just increased the length of its happy hour; it’s now FOUR hours long, on Tues-Sun from 2-6 p.m. Promotions still include $5 pupus (including coconut shrimp rolls) and $5 tiki drinks.

221 Cathcart Street, Santa Cruz, (831) 426-HULA

Vasili’s – now open daily

Greek restaurant Vasili’s in Westside Santa Cruz, formerly open Wed-Sun, is now open daily.

1771 Mission Street, Santa Cruz, (831) 458-9808

Pizzeria Avanti – expanded menu

Pizzeria Avanti now has a “pizza slice bar” at its restaurant. Cheese and pepperoni slices are available for $2.50 and $3. In the past, the only pizza option available to customers was whole pizzas (both small and large) with lots of different topping combinations.

Awards/Accolades

The 32nd annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off and Festivalwas held on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013. There were more than 70 contestants competing in individual (amateur) and professional categories, for either best Boston style or best Manhattan style chowder. Three local restaurants did very well: Ideal Bar & Grill (chef Jesus Garcia) won the People’s Choice award for Best Professional Boston, while official judges awarded Best Professional Boston to South Beach Pizza (chef Dany Pena) and Best Professional Manhattan to Severino’s Bar & Grill (chef Miguel Perez).

Eat organic ice cream at Mission Hill Creamery and benefit Santa Cruz schools

Ice cream from Mission Hill Creamery

Ice cream from Mission Hill Creamery

Visit Mission Hill Creamery’s Scoop Shop and Dessert Cafe—which serves tasty, organic ice cream and other treats—on Tuesday, Feb. 26 to benefit Santa Cruz schools.

This “Scoops for Schools” event is a fundraising partnership between Mission Hill Creamery and the Santa Cruz Education Foundation. Each Tuesday for the past six weeks, Mission Hill Creamery (MHC) has donated 10% of sales towards supporting an individual Santa Cruz City School. The Feb. 26 benefit, with proceeds going to Branciforte Small Schools, is the last fundraiser in this particular round of Scoops for Schools. Other schools in the last few weeks have included West Lake Elementary. MHC and its head chef/owner Dave Kumec are strong community supporters, donating regularly to various worthy causes.

Details: it’s 10% of sales on Tues Feb. 26 between 2 p.m. and closing (which is 10p.m. on weekdays, and 11p.m. on weekends). The ice cream shop is at 1101B Pacific Avenue near Cathcart, next to Taqueria Vallarta and across the street from Kianti’s. It opens at noon daily.

The very delicious artisan ice cream that Kumec creates includes popular flavors such as Salted Caramel, Maple Candied Bacon, El Bracho (Vanilla, Roasted Almonds, Dark Chocolate Chunk), Turkish Coffee, Orange Creamsicle, and Mango. Rotating flavors are posted daily on the MHC Facebook page.

The ice cream shop also features Lulu Carpenter coffee.

Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off and Festival this weekend

A scene from the 2011 Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off

It’s time for the 32nd annual Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off and Festival: Saturday Feb. 23, 2013 at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The Chowder Cook-Off has free admission. If you want to eat chowder, for $9 you get a tasting kit which includes five samples plus two “People’s Choice” ballots so you can vote.

Last year more than 70 individuals and teams participated, including teams from Aquarius, Ideal Bar and Grill, and Local Harvest Catering.

The competition features two divisions:

• Best Individual – with subcategories for both Manhattan & Boston varieties

• Best Professional – with subcategories for both Manhattan & Boston varieties

Some participants dress in whimsical costumes including mermaids, disco clams, scuba divers, and clam fairies. Teams can choose to compete in one or both of the Manhattan & Boston categories. Winners in the 2012 cook-off included Ideal Bar & Grill (first place for Best Boston/Professional) and “La Squadra di Nonna” (Ada Daugherty, Sacramento, first place for Best Manhattan/Individual).

Teams also are in the running for prizes such as “Most Tasted Chowder.” The 2011 winner for that was the Chowder Slugs team which included UC Santa Cruz chefs and Dining Services Director Scott Berlin; that team also came in second for Most Tasted in 2012. First place for Most Tasted in 2012 was Rosie’s Clam & Get It (Kitty Dixon, Soquel).

On Saturday, the Boardwalk rides will be open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Cook-Off Schedule:

  • 10:00 a.m. Cooking starts & tasting kits go on sale
  • 1:00 p.m. Public tasting begins (there is also a judges’ tasting)
  • 4:00 p.m. Winners announced

The cook-off is a fund-raiser for the City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department. Each year during 2011 and 2012 the event raised more than $55,000.

Four-restaurant outing via Dishcrawl Santa Cruz Feb. 26: discount tix available

Ice cream at Mission Hill Creamery from January’s downtown Santa Cruz Dishcrawl

Ice cream at Mission Hill Creamery from January’s downtown Santa Cruz Dishcrawl

Last month’s Dishcrawl Santa Cruz debut in the downtown district was so much fun, organizers are returning to the same area for a second outing on Feb. 26. Dishcrawl ambassador Wes Katayama says he is excited to bring Dishcrawl back to this area to collaborate with even more downtown restaurants and help bring together the community. Read my recap article of January’s downtown Santa Cruz Dishcrawl outing for more details on how the evening works and what Dishcrawlers got to taste last month.

This promises to be a great time, and you get to try four restaurants for $45 (actually, only $35 with the discount provided to my readers; see code below). Part of the fun is you don’t know what four restaurants you’re visiting until that night. But you get to – at most venues – try a “trio of items” and it’s up to the restaurant to interpret that as they wish (for dessert in January, attendees got one scoop of ice cream in a homemade cone or cup – that was plenty, no three-item-combo necessary!).

Many Dishcrawlers who attended the January event mentioned they tried restaurants that they had never been to before. A few attendees that had in fact been previous customers mentioned that with Dishcrawl they got to experience the restaurants “in a more intimate and fun setting.”

Another Dishcrawl Santa Cruz event coming up is “Neighborfood” on Sunday, March 24. Neighborfood as a concept was launched in January 2013 (Dishcrawl takes place in cities across the country, so there have been Neighborfood events elsewhere). These are described as “afternoon celebrations of food, family, and the community we live in.” As Katayama shares, “A neighborhood is defined by the community within it, so, for one afternoon, we will be inviting our neighbors to live it, love it, and eat in it — because ‘One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well’ (according to Virginia Woolf).”

At the Santa Cruz Neighborfood, “Neighbors” will enjoy 8 different restaurants that add to the neighborhood’s unique identity, all within walking distance. It is a self-guided tour that will take place downtown. Unlike Dishcrawls, people will know the restaurants involved beforehand, and will be served a single sampling of the restaurant’s choice (unlike the trio served on Dishcrawls). Also, Dishcrawl Santa Cruz is partnering with a local non-profit that will receive a portion of proceeds (the beneficiary organization will be announced in the near future). Tickets will go on sale in about a week. Watch the Dishcrawl Santa Cruz site for details and also follow them on Twitter @DishcrawlSC.

For $10 off your ticket to the Feb. 26 Dishcrawl Santa Cruz event, order online and enter the word “santacruzfoodies” after finding and checking the box “I have a promotion code.” See you there! Follow me on Twitter @santacruzfoodie.

Celebrate Penny with free ice cream

As I mentioned in my January restaurant news article, The Penny Ice Creamery is expanding once again!  It just opened a new Pleasure Point location at the former site of Verve Coffee’s roastery, between the Verve café and Pink Godzilla. It’s celebrating on Tuesday, Feb. 19 with a ribbon cutting and grand opening party from 3-5 p.m. As a thank you for all of its community support, The Penny is giving out free ice cream during the party! According to co-owner Zach Davis, the new shop will follow the “…Penny formula of seven rotating seasonal flavors as well as the staples of Tahitian Vanilla Bean and Dark Chocolate Sorbet. Treats and daily specials will also grace the menu.”
Hours are 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. daily.

Shadowbrook Shakespeare Benefit

Shakespeare Santa Cruz benefits from sales at Capitola restaurant Shadowbrook on Tuesday, February 19 from 5-10 p.m.

Shadowbrook gives back to local non-profit organizations through a “Community Tuesday” series. For more than 15 years, the restaurant has been donating one-third of sales on selected Tuesday nights to local non-profits. Many nights are shared by two or more non-profits. On Tuesday, February 19, one of the benefiting organizations is Shakespeare Santa Cruz (SSC). Make your reservations at (831) 475-1511 or just show up. Make sure to tell your server you are there to support SSC, and the organization will receive 30% of your pre-tax sales. Whether you enjoy a drink in the Rock Room Lounge and Bar or partake of a full-on dinner in one of the dining areas, it all counts (everything except the “2-for-1” Tuesday Rock Room specials, that is)! SSC is a professional repertory company that performs at UC Santa Cruz. It has delighted audiences for more than 30 years; each summer it hosts a festival with three to four plays including ones by Shakespeare and ones by modern American playwrights.
