The Super Bowl in Santa Cruz: food and drink specials and recommendations

Tacos at Santa Cruz’s Crow’s Nest, one of several restaurants with Super Bowl specials

This Sunday, several Santa Cruz area restaurants and bars are offering food and drink specials during the Super Bowl — here is a round-up. Super Bowl kickoff is at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013.

Bittersweet Bistro

The bar opens at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday for the Super Bowl. For a $25 price, Bittersweet is offering a special Super Bowl buffet and viewing on its 110” TV in the back room. Buffet includes shaved prime rib, French dip with carmelized onion au jus, Bittersweet chili, Nathan’s hot dogs, sliders, nachos, chips and dipsm fruit salad, buffalo chicken wings, submarine sandwiches, tacos, black beans and Spanish rice, pizzettas, and taquitos. Or you can sit in the bar, watch the game on one of seven HD flatscreen TVs, and purchase food and drink off of the bar menu. There will be drink specials and prizes (chance to win Santa Cruz Warriors tickets, a mini Weber BBQ, and more).

787 Rio Del Mar Blvd., Aptos, (831) 662-9799.

Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing

Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing is throwing a Super Bowl party. The microbrewery will set up TVs both inside the bar and on the deck outside, and offer its organic beers on tap plus Wing Ding wings.

402 Ingalls Street, Suite 27, Santa Cruz (831) 425-4900

Crow’s Nest

The oceanfront restaurant’s Super Bowl party kicks off at 3:30 p.m. in the upstairs bar when happy hour prices begin. Crow’s Nest will serve half-price appetizers and well drinks, plus draft beer specials. The happy hour prices last all night – including after the live comedy show starts at 9 p.m.

Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, 2218 East Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz (831) 476-4560

Woodstock’s Pizza

The pizzeria Woodstock’s is offering happy hour prices on drinks during the Super Bowl. Also, if you buy an extra-large pizza with 1 topping or more, you can purchase 12 wings for $5 (valid all day Feb. 3 for dine-in, take-out, or delivery; mention Super Bowl deal when ordering).

710 Front St, Santa Cruz (831) 427-4444

el Salchichero

It’s not a restaurant – but it’s a great butcher shop and retail store if you are having people over for the Super Bowl and have some last-minute shopping to do (or if you just want to cook for yourself). It’s open Sunday (and every Tues-Sun) from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. el Salchichero recommends any or all of these items for Super Bowl treats: beer bacon, blood orange marinated chicken thighs, grass fed steaks, sausages for sandwiches or appetizers, cured meats for a charcuterie plate, Yucatan flat iron, and Mad Marge’s meatballs. If you’re in Live Oak and need last-minute Super Bowl meats, el Salchicero will be at the Live Oak Farmers Market from from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

402 Ingalls Street, Suite 25, Santa Cruz (831) 423-MEAT

Hula’s

Hula’s Island Grill and Tiki Room is offering $5 pupus all night on Super Bowl Sunday. Traditionally the $5 pupus are offered 4:30 – 6 p.m. seven days a week. I went to Hula’s the other night and can recommend these tasty pupus: Abalone Style Calamari (pan-fried calamari with lime-ginger-cream sauce and soy glaze), Sweet Potato Fries (addicting!), and Spicy Edamame.

221 Cathcart Street, Santa Cruz (831) 426-HULA

Ideal Bar & Grill

Ideal is showing the Super Bowl on 10 big screen TVs. Game day specials include the following $5 appetizers: chicken wings, nachos, potato skins, garlic fries, calamari, and quesadillas. Happy Hour is from gametime through closing; drink specials include $3 domestic beers and $3 Cuervo margaritas.

Recap of delicious Santa Cruz restaurant Dishcrawl debut: next one is Feb. 26

Meatballs and homemade pasta at Cafe Mare during Dishcrawl Santa Cruz’s debut dinner

I had the great fortune to attend Dishcrawl’s debut in Santa Cruz last week (read preview article). I really loved it, and can’t wait to attend more in the near future – whether it’s the next one in downtown Santa Cruz in late February (see end of article for discount tickets), or maybe I’ll travel over the hill for something different — there are many South Bay Dishcrawl events.

I must admit that I had my doubts as to whether it would be a fun night – especially hearing that 1) I would probably be dining with a group of 25 or more people (it was 40!), and 2) we wouldn’t know what three of the four restaurants would be, and would find out the first one just 48 hours ahead of time. But it was a delightful mix of interesting people, delicious food, and new tastes and experiences.

The debut event on January 23, like the Dishcrawl slated for Feb. 26, featured restaurants within walking distance of each other in downtown Santa Cruz. We started at Pono Hawaiian Grill at 7pm. Although there weren’t quite enough tables for everyone, this forced my dining companion and I to actually talk to new people right away (a very nice foursome welcomed us to share their table – after I started engaging in interesting conversation, it didn’t bother me at all that I didn’t have a chair). This isn’t usually the case; most of the time at Dishcrawl there are pre-set tables for the attendees – and I found out later in the evening that when an older group of attendees didn’t have a table, a younger group graciously offered theirs up. The food at Pono was plentiful and wonderful. We had large tofu spring rolls that were fresh and flavor-packed, with herbs including cilantro and a macadamia nut dipping sauce. We also ate chicken katsu and pork kalua sliders, all fantastic. That was my first time eating at Pono and I’ll definitely return. Note: vegetarians can be accommodated if they let Dishcrawl know ahead of time.

After about 40 minutes, we left Pono (Dishcrawlers typically spend 30-40 minutes at each stop). Walking outside, we were told to follow the leader as we walked to the next stop – still not knowing where we were going. I was excited about this “restaurant mystery journey.” We reached Café Mare a few minutes later, and the restaurant was ready for us, with plenty of tables and a personal welcome by the owner. The food there was tasty and also visually appealing. We sampled a mini-Bruschetta that included eggplant, a couple homemade meatballs, and a homemade pasta dish. Again, it was my first visit to Mare and I look forward to dining there in the future.

One of the attendees that I got to know over the course of the evening is Dannettee Shoemaker, who came with her husband; they both enjoyed Dishcrawl as much as I did. “Bob and I love downtown Santa Cruz and the Dishcrawl event gave us an opportunity to share some of our local restaurants with a variety of really nice people we may have never had an opportunity to meet,” shared Dannettee. “The tastings format provided new menu choices for future visits. We will definitely participate in more Dishcrawls!”

Our next stop was Rosie McCann’s. I was already full, but I managed to eat and enjoy the food here as well! The presentation was great; we got mini-versions of three signature dishes: fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage, and a grass-fed burger. Even though there was a blackout on the entire block about 30 minutes into our visit, everyone just stayed in their seats and finished their food or drinks…no one complained; it was wonderful. People were in really good moods, and I think it was the Dishcrawl that did it.

Our last stop was Mission Hill Creamery, and it did not disappoint. Owner Dave Kumec gave a fabulous speech, thanking Dishcrawl for including his shop and thanking all of us for participating. He talked a little about Mission Hill’s ice cream, explaining that all the dairy he uses is from organic Straus (you can taste the difference!). He announced we could choose a scoop of any of his 16 flavors for our dessert, including his top-selling Salted Caramel, in a cup or homemade waffle cone. He explained it might take a little while to serve all of us since it was just him and one employee scooping, but again, no one seemed to mind! I saw lots of happy expressions as people tasted Maple Candied Bacon, Dark Chocolate, and of course Salted Caramel.

It was neat to see the foodie community embracing this new event so enthusiastically.

Another perk: at each restaurant a manager or owner came out to talk to our group, and this happens at every Dishcrawl. One thing to note: the amount of food can vary depending on the venue, but typically each restaurant presents a “trio of items.” Of course, there are exceptions including Mission Hill’s one-item dessert (which was plenty).

For $5 off your ticket to the Feb. 26 event, order online and enter the word “santacruzfoodie” after finding and checking the box “I have a promotion code.” See you there!

Grand opening party for Santa Cruz restaurant Lago di Como with free appetizers

Flavorful seafood ravioli from Chef Giovanni at Lago di Como Ristorante in Santa Cruz

The new Santa Cruz restaurant Lago di Como Ristorante & Pizzeria is having its grand opening celebration Monday, and this event includes delicious complimentary appetizers. Owners Mary Ellen and Giovanni Spanu invite you to attend the party on Monday, January 28 from 5-9 p.m. Wine and beer will be available for purchase.

Husband and wife Mary Ellen and Giovanni opened Lago di Como Ristorante & Pizzeria in mid-December; Giovanni is the restaurant’s chef. While Mary Ellen is a California native with Italian roots, Giovanni is from Bellagio, an Italian small town on Lago di Como (Lake Como). Giovanni’s diverse cooking experience includes working as a chef in various areas of Italy plus London, Santa Monica, Campbell, and San Jose. It has always been his dream to have a restaurant of his own where he can plan his own menu, make authentic Italian dishes and pizzas, and be part of the local community.

I dined at Lago di Como in late December, and enjoyed it tremendously. I tried a few dishes during my visit. Standouts included an appetizer with soft polenta, Manchego cheese, butter and garlic; a seafood ravioli entrée (it rotates and highlights a fish of the day in a light cream saffron sauce), and absolutely amazing tiramisu that’s served in a coffee cup for a fun twist. Note that while Lago di Como doesn’t yet offer pizza on its regular menu, there are occasional pizza specials. When the restaurant gains a pizza oven in the future, customers can be assured that pizza will always be available,

The restaurant is at the former site of Nuevo Southwestern Grill (which closed in Summer 2012). It’s undergone quite a transformation and has a sophisticated yet down to earth atmosphere. Former Nuevo customers might not recognize the interior; for example, the upper level separated by a divider has been removed and now the venue feels much more spacious.

“I am excited to be a part of Lago di Como Ristorante because (all biases aside) Giovanni is an excellent chef and makes some amazing Italian dishes,” Mary Ellen shares. “I also know that Giovanni takes pride in the food he prepares and has high standards in the kitchen. I enjoy seeing customers enjoying their food, relaxing and having a good time in our restaurant.”

“We love living in Santa Cruz and wanted to open a restaurant of our own right here in town,” adds Mary Ellen. “We both grew up in Italian families where mealtimes were social events. Italian families get together and have long multi-course meals and talk, eat, drink wine, and are in no hurry to get up from the table. It wasn’t a matter of waiting for a special occasion to have a nice meal — because having the nice meal became the special occasion. It was what brought everyone together.” Lago di Como definitely has the ability to bring people together for good Italian food in a pleasant environment – I recommend visiting soon, and going to the grand opening party if you can.

The 6th Annual Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival benefits UCSC scholarships

Cupcakes from Buttercup Cakes & Farmhouse Frosting, a participant in the 6th annual Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival

This weekend is a sweet time of year: the 6th annual Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival is on Sunday January 20 and it benefits student scholarships. The event is from 1 – 4 p.m. at the Cocoanut Grove by the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

The Santa Cruz Chocolate Festival brings approximately 30 vendors to the Cocoanut Grove, and this year there will be wine tasting available for the first time. Participants range from local confectioners and bakers like Ashby Confections, Iveta, Snake and Butterfly Chocolate, Original Sin Desserts, and Buttercup Cakes and Farmhouse Frosting, to vendors from other parts of Northern California (Foxy’s Toffee, for one) and even other states (like Theo Chocolate from Washington). Other local companies who will be present include fabulous ice cream businesses Mission Hill Creamery and Penny Ice Creamery.

Each vendor will have treats – including gourmet truffles and cupcakes — available in exchange for a tasting ticket. In addition to the tastes you can get in exchange for your tickets, selected vendors will be selling chocolate products including some suitable for Valentine’s Day like gift assortments. There will also be a cupcake decorating booth which costs $2.

For the first time, wine will be available for attendees aged 21 and over; Alfaro Family Vineyards and Sones Cellars are among the participants. Buy tickets online or at the event. For $15 you get six tastings of food and/or wine. In order to drink wine, you need to buy a commemorative wine glass for $5 (includes one tasting).

Bid on items at a silent auction with both chocolate-themed and non-chocolate-themed items donated by businesses and individuals from the local community. Prizes include Giants tickets, wine tasting and restaurant gift certificates, and passes to Monterey Bay Aquarium. You can visit the festival for free (you don’t need a tasting ticket) if you want to participate in the auction or buy gifts from vendors.

The festival benefits re-entry student scholarships at UC Santa Cruz (for students returning to higher education after an extended absence, often students who are also parents or military veterans). The chocolate festival is presented by the UCSC Women’s Club, a nonprofit organization open to women of both the campus and local communities. The club has meetings throughout the year (except for the summer) with engaging speakers, and also hosts interest groups including book clubs. In the last 30 years the club has awarded over 300 scholarships totaling more than $200,000 to deserving women and men for research activities, tuition and childcare.

Explore four restaurants in one night via the Downtown Santa Cruz Dishcrawl

Dessert from a Dishcrawl in San Jose

San Jose has been having Dishcrawls for a while now, and finally Santa Cruz is getting its very own! The first one is Wednesday, January 23 beginning at 7 p.m. It costs $45; buy tickets online. See end of article for a chance to win a $20 discount on the January 23 event!

Here’s an overview: Dishcrawl, as the company proclaims, is similar to a pub crawl but it’s focused on food instead of drinks (although you’re welcome to consume drinks as well). You pay one price for the event, and then get to go on a “culinary tour” and explore four restaurants in one evening, all within walking distance from each other. The names of the restaurants are kept a secret; ticket-holders are emailed this information 48 hours prior to the event.

Wes Katayama is the Santa Cruz Dishcrawl Ambassador. Dishcrawl is located in many cities across the country, plus Canada. Each city has an ambassador who takes charge of the events and enjoys connecting local foodies with interesting restaurants. Dishcrawl has just arrived in Santa Cruz, and Katayama is excited to lead folks on these journeys. “My goal, like the goal of Dishcrawl, is to ultimately strengthen the community bond through food,” shares Katayama. “Food is such an amazing tool for bringing people together, and with these events we hope to bring locals together, and tighten their relationship with the local restaurants and chefs around them.” Feel free to email the Ambassador at wesk@dishcrawl.com with any questions. Note that if you’re vegetarian, you can definitely be accommodated — you just need to specify that when purchasing tickets.

For more information, see the Santa Cruz Dishcrawl web site, Facebook page, and Twitter account (@dishcrawlsc).

CONTEST:

Enter to win a $20 discount on one ticket to Santa Cruz Dishcrawl. You need to do both of the following by Wednesday, January 16 at noon:

1) Follow @dishcrawlsc and @santacruzfoodie on Twitter.

2) Email tfatemiwalker@yahoo.com and include the words “Dishcrawl Santa Cruz contest” (also let me know your Twitter name so that I can verify you have followed both Twitter accounts)

Celebrate National Soup Month at Haute Enchilada in Moss Landing

Soup Trio Sampler at Haute Enchilada in Moss Landing

One way to celebrate National Soup Month in 2013, which is January: visit Haute Enchilada Café & Galerias in Moss Landing.

You’re invited to visit Haute Enchilada and order its soup trio sampler of Chicken Tortilla, Roasted Chili Poblano Bisque, and Artichoke Bisque. It’s available all year long, but this month’s soup significance – not to mention our current local weather – make it a perfect time. I have never dined at Haute Enchilada and this trio is definitely tempting me. If you prefer to celebrate soup month by making your own soup, Haute Enchilada has also graciously shared a recipe (see end of article). A couple interesting facts related to National Soup Month: Approximately 10 billion bowls of soup are consumed by Americans every year! Also, soup has been popular from its origins in Greece (600 B.C.), when it was considered the first “fast food.” The Greeks sold soup on the street using lentils, beans and peas as the main ingredients.

Haute Enchilada has quite an eclectic menu that includes sustainable seafood and organic ingredients when possible. Selections include Peruvian Ceviche; lamb wraps with cumin-seasoned lamb patties wrapped in organic butter lettuce leaves with tomato, sweet red onion, roasted vegetables, eggplant, red bell pepper, onion & mushrooms, goat cheese and aioli; Roasted Veggie Polenta Lasagna; Rosemary Chicken Panini; and Scallops Sayulita (wrapped in nitrate-free bacon, seasoned with ancho chile and served over artichoke risotto). The restaurant also offers a full bar plus two art galleries with local artists’ original work: hence its clever tag line “from palate to palette.” It’s open daily from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. for brunch, lunch, and dinner.

Location: 7902 Moss Landing Road, (831) 633-5843

Recipe for Haute Enchilada’s favorite Favada (Fava Bean Stew)

  • 1 pound fava beans, dry (Cover with water and soak overnight)
  • 4 cups water
  • Drain beans
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 10 oz slab bacon, chopped
  • 1 cup Spanish chorizo
  • 1 cup free range organic chicken
  • 3 T olive oil
  • 1 t pimentón smoked paprika
  • 1 pinch of saffron
  • Saute garlic, onion with olive oil add bacon, chicken and chorizo
  • Add beans, water, saffron and pimenton
  • Cook until beans are tender

Santa Cruz restaurant Hula’s benefits Seymour Center on Mondays in January

Poke at Hula’s in downtown Santa Cruz

Go out for dinner or drinks at the downtown Santa Cruz restaurant Hula’s on Monday nights in January, and part of your meal will benefit the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Long Marine Lab (part of UCSC’s Institute of Marine Sciences).

During the month of January, Hula’s Island Grill & Tiki Room – a festive place to eat and drink with lots of great selections – is donating 10% of all Monday nights sales to UCSC’s Seymour Center. This promotion is part of the restaurant’s Mahalo Mondays Community Giving program; each month a different non-profit organization receives 10% of Monday evening sales. In 2011, Hula’s donated over $10,000 to local organizations via Mahalo Mondays proceeds.

The menu at Hula’s features Hawaiian fusion dishes and other choices; highlights include slow roasted pulled pork, jungle tofu, seared ahi wontons, shrimp tacos, Hawaiian fish soup, and sweet potato fries. In addition, you can choose between four types of fish (ahi, ono, mahi, and hapu) and pick one of seven preparation types to match it with. For example, pick macadamia-encrusted mahi or blackened ono. Hula’s also offers a tiki bar with tropical drink specialties. Reservations are required for parties of 6 or more; call (831) 426-4852.

Seymour Marine Discovery Center is dedicated to educating people about the role scientific research plays in the understanding and conservation of the world’s oceans. Hula’s co-owner Ian McRae explains the perfect fit between Seymour Center and the restaurant’s Mahalo Mondays program: “In the spirit of Mahalo (giving thanks), Hula’s wants to give back to the community that’s been so supportive of us. As a restaurant that serves seafood it is part of our obligation to help make sure our oceans are healthy for us and future generations.”
