Here is the current status of many local restaurants, grocery stores and other food/drink vendors, as of the end of the day May 3.

Some of the several items in this article that are new since last time: Coffeetopia (some locations), Verve Coffee Roasters, Harbor Café, Hula’s, Mikayo Sushi and The Kitchen at Discretion have re-opened, and Aunt LaLi’s has expanded delivery areas. I added listings for vendors such as Ashby Confections, Ella’s at the Airport, Gordo Gustavo’s, Mobo Sushi, Mr. Z’s Crepes & Teas, Tacos Morenos, and Taqueria Vallarta (restaurant section) & Mariquita Farm (Miscellaneous & Farms section).

Let’s try to support as many local businesses as we can during these challenging times—depending on our ability, of course: each person and family is different.

I hope everyone understands there will be some mistakes in my articles, as things are constantly changing. Note that I can’t include every Santa Cruz County business, as this is a manual effort.

Please email tara@santacruzfoodie.com if you have information to share, or corrections, for future articles.

Farmers’ Markets

Update May 3: For the first time, the downtown Santa Cruz Wednesday farmers market is offering—as of Wed. May 6—the Market Match Program, which offers customers with CalFresh cards a dollar-for-dollar match up to $10. An example: if a CalFresh customer swipes a card for $10 they receive 10 additional dollars in tokens at no charge. A $7 swipe equals a $7 match, and a $15 swipe equals a $10 match. These can only be used to purchase fresh produce. Now Market Match is available at all five Santa Cruz Community Farmers Markets locations. In addition, May is DOUBLE MATCH month at the 3 currently open markets (downtown, Live Oak & Westside). For the duration of May, they match your first 10 EBT dollars with $2 of market match. This means a $10 EBT swipe becomes $30 ($10 EBT/$20 Match), a $7 swipe becomes $21 ($7 EBT/$14 Match), a $20 swipe becomes $40 ($20 EBT/$20 Match). Visit http://www.santacruzfarmersmarket.org/.

The Wednesday Downtown, Saturday Westside and Sunday Live Oak markets from Santa Cruz Community Farmers Markets are currently open. They recently added a Senior Shopping period. This is 30 minutes prior to the market’s opening time, so it is from 12:30-1pm for the Downtown Market and 8:30-9am for the Westside and Live Oak markets. The markets are following strict safety guidelines. Read more athttp://www.santacruzfarmersmarket.org/sc-community-farmers-markets-and-covid-19.

El Pájaro CDC Commercial Kitchen Incubator Program hosts weekly booths at the Westside and Live Oak farmers’ markets. Upcoming vendor appearances are Hakouya at Westside May 9, and Dos Hermanos Pupuseria at Live Oak May 10.

The Saturday Aptos/Cabrillo College market, also open with regular hours, is utilizing safety measures such as hand sanitizer and hand washing stations. Farmers and vendors are wearing gloves. Keep up to date via their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MBFarmersMarket/.

The opening dates for the two “seasonal (not year-round) markets” operated by The Santa Cruz Community Farmers Markets, Felton and Scotts Valley, have been postponed to the first week of June because of COVID-19. The Felton Market will begin June 2 and the Scotts Valley Market will open June 6.

Santa Cruz County food & drink changes & closures, as of April 26, 2020

Here is the current status of many local restaurants, grocery stores and other food/drink vendors, as of April 26 (as far as I know). Exciting news: I was at H&H’s retail shop yesterday buying fresh black cod, and they reminded me that commercial salmon season starts May 1, so they will be stocking salmon starting that day! I was first a customer of both H&H and Ocean2Table several years ago, and I highly recommend both of them (see Seafood section).

Some of the several items in this article that are new since last time: Dharma’s and Café Cruz opened back up on April 24—Café Cruz is doing a few groceries too—and Vim is re-opening April 29 (see Restaurants section). New restaurants to this list include Mozaic, Saturn Cafe and Toya Sushi (see Restaurants). There is news on a benefit beer release from Humble Sea, and I included info on these five drink vendors for the first time: Java Junction & Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Co. (see Restaurants) East Cliff Brewing Co. and Shanty Shack Brewing (see Breweries), and Bottle Jack Winery (see Wine).

Sad news: long-standing restaurant Gilda’s on the Santa Cruz Wharf, run by the Stagnaro Family, has decided to permanently close.

Let’s try to support many local businesses so they can survive…and with this list, please understand there will be some mistakes as things are constantly changing. Also, I can’t include every Santa Cruz County business, as this is a manual effort.

Please email tara@santacruzfoodie.com if you have information to share, or corrections, for future articles.

Farmers’ Markets

The Wednesday Downtown, Saturday Westside SC and Sunday Live Oak marketsfrom Santa Cruz Community Farmers Markets are currently open. They recently added a Senior Shopping period. This is 30 minutes prior to the market’s opening time, so it is from 12:30-1pm for the Downtown Market and 8:30-9am for the Westside and Live Oak markets.

The markets are following strict safety guidelines. I went to the Live Oak market April 12 (my first time at a farmers market since the pandemic) and was pleased with all the 6-foot markers (tape on ground, etc.), and masks/gloves on various vendors. Read more athttp://www.santacruzfarmersmarket.org/sc-community-farmers-markets-and-covid-19.

Also, El Pájaro CDC Commercial Kitchen Incubator Program hosts weekly booths at the Westside and Live Oak farmers’ markets. Upcoming vendor appearances are Dos Hermanos Pupuseria at Westside May 2 (I recently tried their pupusas & loved them!), and Santa Cruz Balsamics at Live Oak May 3.

Santa Cruz County food & drink changes & closures, as of April 18, 2020

Recent offerings from Tortilla Flats
photo courtesy of Tortilla Flats Facebook page

Hi again. Here is the latest status of many local restaurants, grocery stores and other food/drink vendors. Some highlights: the restaurant section includes new info on sweet treats from Aunt LaLi’s & The Penny Ice Creamery, lots of Mexican options such as Taqueria Michoacan and other spots including Paula’s; a few farmers markets are opening 30 minutes early just for seniors; the grocery store section has new details for family-owned Del Pueblo Market; brewery info now includes Nubo; wine info now includes Vinocruz; and the “Other/Miscellaneous” section includes delivery of Hakouya products and Boardwalk-style foods.

Let’s hope all of our local businesses can stay afloat! The list is current as of the end of the day yesterday, April 18. Please understand there will be some mistakes: things are constantly changing. Also, I can’t possibly include every single business in Santa Cruz County, as this is a manual effort.

Please email tara@santacruzfoodie.com if you have information to share, or corrections, for future articles.

Farmer’s Markets

The Wednesday Downtown, Saturday Westside SC and Sunday Live Oak markets from Santa Cruz Community Farmers Markets are currently open.

Upcoming vendor appearances are My Mom’s Mole at Westside April 25, and Cali Dawg at Live Oak April 26.

Santa Cruz County food/drink closures & changes, as of March 21, 2020

Truffles at Chocolate Restaurant
photo by Liz Birnbaum of The Curated Feast

As I mentioned in my post Thursday, I am doing what I can to share information during the Coronavirus pandemic. Hoping this helps those of you who are either buying groceries or ready-to-eat food and drinks, and also helps the local business owners. Unfortunately I’ve already heard of one closing because of the health crisis: the restaurant/pub 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall announced Thursday it would be closing for good because they wouldn’t be able to survive this.

I wanted to also mention, for staying healthy, that Capitola’s The Vitamin Center is taking phone orders and offering curbside pickup. Call 831-462-4697 after 10 a.m. daily except Sunday.

Please forgive any mistakes in these listings, as it’s a constantly changing situation. Email me at tara@santacruzfoodie.com if you have information to share, that I can add to future articles. I’ll provide more listings in a couple days.

Christmas and Hanukkah goodies at Whole Foods Market in Santa Cruz & Capitola

Christmas and Hanukkah are coming soon—in case you need some inspiration, I looked to Whole Foods Market for a few tips. Whole Foods Market locations in Capitola (1710 41st Ave.) and Santa Cruz (911 Soquel Ave.) always have lots of delicious, seasonal products, and the company generously gave me a gift card to enjoy a few items.

You can place orders in person or online; they must be made 48 hours before you want to pick them up. Depending on occasion, customers can place their holiday orders through Dec. 29; pick up dates are from Dec. 19-31.

Whole Foods Market has partnered with James Beard Award-winning chef, restaurateur and author Michael Solomonov for a pre-made Hanukkah meal for eight. Solomonov wrote “Zahav: A World of Israeli Cooking.” Here are details on the meal:

  • Chicken Schnitzel with Apple Amba SauceMatzo-crusted chicken cutlers with hawaij—turmeric, cumin and black pepper—then fried crisp and served with a tangy Apple Amba Sauce
  • Green Beans with Mushrooms and Tehina (Vegetarian) – Tender green beans roasted with mushrooms and tossed in tehina sauce—tehina, apple cider vinegar, shallots and fenugreek—topped with beluga lentils and crispy garlic
  • Twice-Cooked Eggplant (Vegetarian) – First charred for deep flavors, eggplant is then mashed and simmered with onions, red bell pepper, paprika and coriander, and brightened by sherry vinegar and lemon juice
  • Leek and Potato Cakes – Shredded potato, matzo and onion pancakes, fried until crisp and tasty

There are three other chefs that Whole Foods Market has collaborated with this holiday season: Nicole Rucker, James Beard Award–winning cookbook author Stella Parks, and cookbook author Jenné Claiborne. Their special offerings include desserts like Honey Chess Pie (think buttery custard, warming spices flaky crust, whipped cream and candied ginger – this is from Rucker, a four-time blue-ribbon pie contest winner and author of “Dappled: Baking Recipes for Fruit Lovers). Have a different kind of sweet tooth? There’s Parks’ Caramel Spice Cake (includes buttermilk spice cake, layers of cranberry jam, cream cheese frosting, and caramel glaze—pastry chef Parks wrote “BraveTart: Iconic American Desserts). Chef/blogger Claiborne, author of “Sweet Potato Soul: 100 Easy Vegan Recipes,” has created a vegan Southern holiday meal for two which includes mushroom étouffée (delicious – I tried it!) and black-eyed pea fritters.

Traditional offerings include classic roast turkey dinner (turkey breast for four or whole turkey for four, eight or 12—includes sides like green beans with roasted shallots), and prime rib or spiral-sliced ham dinner for eight. A la carte sides include creamed spinach and kale (includes cream, Parmesan and garlic), corn pudding, and cider-roasted Brussels sprouts with pepitas.

Other Whole Foods Market order-ahead offerings perfect for the holidays:

  • Appetizers & Party Platters like Crostini Kits (varieties include Chevre & Tomato Crostini, Smoked Salmon Crostini, Roast Vegetable Crostini), Crab Cakes, or Antipasti Platter. Each of these platters serves 10.
  • Desserts like Mini Pastry Platter or Berry Chantilly Cake (each serves eight) or Pistachio Chocolate Torte (serves six)
